Checking the oil level on the 3.0

Hi

I've tried to check my oil level, with a warm switched off engine etc, as stated in the owners manual but the OBC just states 'not available'

This also happened during my familiarization with the saleswomen when I collected the car. I was told this was because the engine was cold.

Today was the first time I have tried checking the oil since collection.

Please help, what am i doing wrong? Confused

Fishy - would love to help - but afraid ours seems to work fine doing just what you are doing. I am afraid that your problem may be confirming my fears - which are that relying on an electronic sensor to monitor something as important as the oil level is a worry which I would rather do without. But LR felt it ok to omit something as basic (but reassuring) as a dipstick on the 3.0L.

Hi
I had the same probeem the first couple of times I used it too. Seems to have fixed itself now however Confused Mine is not cold related - I just went out & tried it - engine not stated for two days and it worked fine - may be that it needs some time to settle down after the engine has been running?

Allow 10 minutes from the engine switch off for the engine oil level to stabilize.

Turn the ignition on.

10. Press the right-hand directional button to access the instrument cluster menu.

11. Press the right-hand OK button.

12. Press the right-hand directional button to access the Oil Level Display.

13. Press the right-hand OK button and follow the instructions.

14. Press the cruise control cancel button twice within 2 seconds.

15. The message center display will revert to the normal display in the trip computer.

Press the right-hand OK button and follow the instructions.

Check that the oil level display shows an oil level reading.

Take a reading from the level display and, if necessary, top up with oil as instructed.

16. Turn the ignition off.

OK.....

As much as I am in favour in advancing technology....wouldnt a dip stick be easier & absolute i.e. what you dip is what you have.
Maybe the dipstick will be an optional extra....

Takes my mind back to a guy I once worked with whao had a Reliant Regal 21E
the 21 E referred to 21 extras....
Spare wheel....
Sun Visors.....

As the vehicle gets older & systems start to fail...this isnt one that "fails safe" i.e. low oil / cant start engine...can see failed engines.
 BREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics
Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.
Founder: Dipsticks-R-Us Inc
D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

Progress, great innit.

Wife's old Laguna (S plate so going back about 10 years) had an electronic dipstick. On startup it read from the cold engine and told you the oil level. Sounds a little more intuitive than "press button e twice, then button a once before performing the right of Ashkent - but only on a Wednesday"
I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

Just in case any D4 owners are feeling picked on about this issue :
