cherished number plates - question
Folks
a few of you must have cherished plates on your motors. My question is, for those of you that may have, how shall I put this - non standard spacing (probably should be asking this on the RRS forum), have you ever had any problems with the boys in blue?

generally, the advice is don't....everyone will think you're a pratt......unless you've 22" chrome spinners and 99.9% tints in which case you will confirm it!

Get private plates that mean something without funny spaces or screw caps. Case of if it's worth doing.......

I have a set with all five letters/digits pushed together - no spaces. But I've only ever use the front one. (and in fact I can't use the rear one now) - when up north, I drive past Stockport Police Station every day - and have never been stopped. I don't agree with changing digits/letters to look like other digits/letters with fonts or screwheads. The 5 in mine still looks like a 5 - even though its meant to be an S (but from a distance who can tell?)Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

A general rule of thumb......is it still readable?
Of course though, every Trafpol is different but 'most' still do have common sense.

I havnt purchased this particular plate (yet), but a bit like Steve, just wanted to "lose" a space, not change any letters/numbers.

to qualify my earlier response, losing spaces etc is, ok I suppose, its the open 4, 8 with a bolt through it or worse the distorted typeface brigade that you want to avoid...this just looks plain silly and they should have to drive around with PEN 1S as punishment!2007 HSE Java Black.....sold

Been looking at this myself.
Don't forget to take in to consideration the different front and rear plate configuration. There are some spacings you will get away with on the front plate, that just wont work on the back. And vice-versa
I am looking for a dateless with initials......

I'd like to squeeze the 5 digits across the middle of the standard 2 line rear plate (in 1 line) but I'm not convinced it'll fitSteve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)

yep -getting dogdy.
for me, if it looks like its been messed with to make it look private, it evades the point.

with regard to the rear plate, if you find somebody that makes "show" plates, you can get a double height one (like we all have now), but slightly wider (almost the width of the tailgate handle which is wider than the normal UK numberplate), which I think would still look OK and you could get 5 digits in a line on that.

I think that if you are going to "play" around with caps and moving letters you should only do the front one as an oncoming plod has to turn around to pursue you, this will normally spill their coffee and the doughnut will fall on the floor , all too much effort for a plate.
and if they are behind you they wil l have more time to notice the plate and pull you over.

I suggest you get 2 sets made: legal and not-so legal.
You will need the legal ones when it comes to MOT-time, as you will fail if you have illegal spacing. When our Mini was due its first MOT, the local garage looked at the plate and told my wife to not even think about getting an MOT unless the plates were changed.
You can see my not-so legal ones in my gallery. No longer a D3 owner but still subscribed to multiple threads!
