China 2011 Discovery 4 3.0 SDV6 HSE Auto Santorini BlackDiscovery 4
china roadtrip more photos added

took a trip south from my hometown a few hundred miles.
roads were interesting...... many places are unsurfaced and after some rough parts cars were jacked up changing buckled wheels. the concrete slabs have beed laid without foundation so crack leaving kerb size steps in the road and buses/lorries swerve to avoid them( into your path). Travelled over a mountain which was chilly at -8 and snowy. most people used snow chains but the problem was ground clearance as the snow burried rock fall was great at grounding out cars (some cars Wink )

our destination was a town famous for the Yi minority people (famous for having slaves into the 60's) and is a town of BBQ's had some yummy pigjaw BBQ (toothpick required)

on the way back came by an even more "interesting" (code for dangerous) route. where as we drove along small stones contiually fall onto the car as you drive around huge boulders...unnearving..a little.
the pictures do not show the drop off about 100m into a lake

passed asign but could not stop to photo as it was a ban on aliens passing (illegal for non chinese to pass)anyhoo I did and drove through some secret tunnels housing nukes....shh
the bridges all had holes where overloaded lorries had broken them and you have to drive aound them looking down..nice at least the D4 is not too heavy...
new highway above complete but closed to traffic, crappy road I'm on below it..nice view tho'

saw two cars crashed one rolled and a guy squashed, also a biker ran off the road by a lorry into a drainage ditch.

arrived now thats a good gps view Very Happy

all in all a great trip six in the car with gear. drove 14hrs non stop on one road as to drive it in the dark would be fatal.

Oh and on one stretch of pretty good road with a 120 kn/hr speed limit the road ended without notice...brakes work well don't they. Surprised

10.1l/100km avg speed 42kmhr.

could not think of a better vehicle to do it in

thought I would add a few more pics
this was some live food (shrimps) flipping about in liquor and spices

this tunnel was hand carved. It's only wide enough for one car. Next to it was another tunnel but that had callapsed leaving just this one.

at Xichang you can take the cable car up the hill and sit on sml trolleys and tabogen back down..that was fun

a nice double span cable stay bridge (unused)

in the slave museum they have prices for the slaves. check how much you are worth (in 1930 anyway)

the notice reads in this order with price in local money on right
9-10 yr girl
about 19 yr girl
about 25yr woman
40-50yr woman
about 25yr guy
1-18yr boy
about 30yr guy
40-50yrs guy

my wife said I was overpriced at 1.5-3 while she could still fetch 28

said wife doing a "repectful" celebratory rap in local Yi people clothes

peasant housing on a hill

a land of many a varied terrain (and another spot the D4 wing mirror shot)

just read in the paper that the snow mountain we crossed was blocked a few hours after we passed it and people were stuck there in their cars for three days...chilly

enjoy

Great trip. You should get yourself a Blackvue, and sell the footage to Discovery Channel "Most dangerous roads"
