Choices...

g'day from Sydney

Need to tap the colective wisdom here. I'm moving on from a 2012 RR Sport (too harsh a ride, too cramped) to a Discovery. And I'm having a hard time deciding between 3 models
- 2013 SDV6 with the 8-speed 'box. Love the flappy paddles and the rotary dial, but worried about the slow 'box off the start
- 2012 SDV6 Limited Edition. All bells and whistles incl. rear seat entertainment, responsive 6-speed 'box (yes, our 2012 model was your 2011); but not the latest model, no flappy paddles
- 2012 V8. All the bells and whistles as well, peach of an engine - smooth, healthy in the rpms; but limited range, no flappy paddles

All three about the same price and fuel cost doesn't matter

Which should I pick, and why?

Cheers

I'm conscious not to launch that debate here Whistle yet I found the 8-speed 'box takes a little while to get going from a standstill. Clearly that doesn't bother you, which is great to hear.

Er..no ...it doesn't happen on my 2013MY...which is why it doesn't bother me Laughing Wink

The 8 speed takes it to 60mph in 8.8 seconds and I find the delivery to be fairly instant in comparison to the old 6 speed box. You would know from the RRS it's an adaptive box .....so is there a chance that during your test drive it may not have had an opportunity to reflect your driving style perhaps ? Smile

the flappy paddles are great for engine breaking if you live in the mountains and want to spare your break pads. I live in the Alps and they are a god send. never gave them a thought when i ordered my MY13 but now that i have used them i wouldn't go back

............if you live in a flat area then maybe not such a useful addition

My 8-speed is perfect too.

But if fuel price was no object and you can manage the gaps between fuel stops the V8 is quite attractive.

Then again, so is the 600Nm of torque from the diesel.

Thumbs Up

8 speed may not have adapted yet. Also, how many ks did it have on it; it takes a while for the engine to loosen up. Mine has only recently freed up and it is great. (no 8 speed)

That might be true. The car I drove had 400km on and might not have bedded down yet

The throttle/box response gave me a few flutters in roundabouts and crossing roads, though. Not sure I'd enjoy that over the long term: I drive in traffic every day.

Would 8-speed SDV6 owners go for a V8, all cost being equal?

Yes, all being equal. Used the flappy paddles once when I first had it then remembered I bought an auto' for a reason..... Whistle

I don't tow large items so make no comment how useful for that, always been ok in full auto mode on motorbike trailers.

Can't beat a V8 if fuel costs acceptable but range may only be around 260 miles or so in a Disco'?
