Why is choosing tyres so difficult?

Having spent hours reading all have pros and cons - just cant decide. Am looking at the following three tyres:

Yokohama Geolander GO15
Toyo Open Country AT Plus
Cooper Discoverer AT3 4S

Usage = daily driver / motorway / cross the Pyrenees... and UK greenlaning (non mud)

Any preferences / stories if you were buying?

Yep, its difficult, partly i think because they generally last so long.

if you get the wrong tyres, its potentially years or an expensive mistake before they are replaced.

May also be worth looking at General Grabber AT3 or Pirelli AT Plus as well. Ive no experience with either, but they are probably my top two at the moment.

I put Goodyear Duratracs on mine last year. I don't do much off-road, but I wanted something a bit more rugged than the Scorpions which I had before.

As far as tyres go, they've been fine. Still got a good tread depth after c. 15,000 miles and I'm not aware of any additional road noise. Although that might be to do with Iron Maiden, Hawkwind and Uriah Heep...

Anyway, to me, they really add to the look of the car.

I've used the Grabber AT3 and it worked well on road and off. Got a bit slippy on the road in the wet once it was worn to about 5mm but still worked well off road. No noise issues even when worn. Worked well in the snow, not brilliant on ice but then it's not a full winter tyre. Better tyre all round than the Grabber AT that preceded it.

Recently went over to the Pirelli AT+. So far, no noise issues and has been very good on wet and dry tarmac. No off road or winter use yet but I doubt it would be any worse than the AT3.

I did pick up a deep sidewall cut or two (neither caused deflation) on the AT3 in a recent Wales off road weekend on some rocky tracks but that was mostly down to being Defender-created ruts with no option to avoid the rocks.

+1 for robpenrose comment. I fitted GG AT'3s back end of last year at a cost of £566 for 4, nothing wrong with them but i have changed what i want to do with the vehicle so am going to take the hit and change to Goodyear Duratracs.
Both will be 255/55x19 size tyres.

Its a Censored quandary isn't it...I was looking at Cooper Weathermasters wsc, any reason why you didn't consider or ruled them out.....I had Goodyear Duratracs on a Ford Ranger they were pretty good tbh

Just to add to your confusion Razz

I recently replaced my tyres and spent alot of time looking at all the possibilities and ended up deciding on Pirelli AT+ on 255/55/19 111H

Chose them as I like the look of the tyre tread and reviews suggested they are very good for on and off road.

So far I have been very pleased with them, good grip in the dry and wet and no road noise, not used of road yet.

I use my car as a daily driver, country roads and motorway driving, and intend to go off-road later on in the year.

How many miles on the GG AT’3s? I’ll be on the hunt for tyres for a set of wheels I’m waiting on arriving and might be interested in them.

Duratracs for me, found them to be better than the GG for my use. Costco deal coming back on in Apr I believe.
A lot will depend on tyre size needed, blow is a little write up I did a while back after some research on available AT choices for 255/55 r19.

AT Tyre info update (19/02/19):

All 255/55 R19 111XL (Available in other sizes)

In order of aggressiveness & availability. All bar the last are AT’s.

Note:
Snowflake - manufactures mark suggesting better in snow though no tests.
3PMSF - designates a ‘Winter’ rating, tested to recognised standards & noted improvement shown in efficiency.

Std Factory Fit (FF) road tyres usually V rated (149mph).

Pirelli Scorpion ATR (H Rated M&S no symbol) & Pirelli AT+ (H rated, 3PMSF symbol), fairly new to market.
Not used them, never been a big Pirelli fan due to fast wear rates though others rate highly.
GGAT3 (H Rated) - Based on the AT2 which I’ve used along with the AT, not used these, however a good compromise for rd/off rd, noisy when worn, a favourite of many.
Goodyear Wrangler AT Adventure (H Rated M+S but no symbol) - Relatively new to market, not used. A replacement for the fabled MTR due 2019 allegedly.
Cooper Zeon LTZ (H Rated)- Removed mine after 9 months as I found them to clog up in mud & skittish in the wet. Nuff said. NOW BEING PHASED OUT
Cooper AT3 Sport (H Rated M&S, No Symbol).
Replacement for LTZ Not used & only just on the market.
Toyo Open Country + (H rated, No Symbol) - Again not used them.
Hankook Dynapro AT/m (RF10) (M&S H Rated) - again not used them.
Goodyear Duratrac (Q Rated M&S (Snowflake marked) - As fitted to the London-Beijing D4’s, speed rating downgraded (from S) as they are now classed (along with below) as a Pro Comp Tyre, on my 3rd set & love them, no issues in any surface I’ve met inc heavy snow.

GGX3, (Q Rated, No Symbol)- the only MT offering, not used, good reviews.

Speed Ratings (Mph/Kmh)
Q - 99/160
S - 112/180
H - 130/210
V - 149/240

I didn't find the GG AT3 was noisy at it wore down. The previous GG AT did develop a noticeable drone, however.

I liked the GG AT3 and only changed away from it to see what the Pirelli AT+ was like.

Note that the GG AT3 is also 3PMSF rated. The GG AT was not.
