I get this - it's brilliant, it's the PC equivalent of doing a BIOS update. But I also know how bad one of those is if it goes wrong - the PC goes in the bin. Binning my D3 due to scrambled firmware isn't an option I want to consider. Is there an Idiot Guide for doing this?

The first time you plug in the tool it saves the original car set up so you can always recover the original settings Discovery 3 se gone

Be prepared. Fully charged battery and connected to extra power. Personally I’ve used a Ford 7810 but others will suggest that’s overkill and will suggest easier options.
It’s a heart stopping few minutes and once the doors start locking and unlocking and every warning light flashes you’ll question the wisdom of what you’re doing to your D3 But it’ll all work out and you’ll be searching for other things to do with the IID. If you are unlucky enough to brick your D3, Gap will be there to help you with step by step instructions to sort everything

Whoo! It worked!
I hadn’t appreciated that the latest CCFs are already held within the IID Tool, so it really is just a question of plugging in, getting the right menu and swallow the brave pill as all the dire warnings are displayed before it starts… and then waiting for the update to written… and the have the D3 come back to life with a stream of catastrophic warnings that the IID then handily removes.
As a result, not only do I now have a clock displayed within the instrument cluster, but the 3-flash option for the indicators now works too. I’ve also enabled the low coolant warning and worn brake pad warning options. Since nothing has since happened, I assume that either both are fine or they’re inoperative options on an early D3.
Even so – result! Thank you for the idea and the subsequent reassurances.

Ah, but then there’s the side-effect to using later firmware I’ve just discovered.
Later D3s have a headlamp active lamp lower left of the LCD display. Now I’m running later firmware, that lamp has become active. The snag is, that previously unused lamp isn’t a green lamp icon – it’s a red outline of the vehicle with three wavy heat arrows going up into it. What threw me is that it only happened when I started driving this evening, so I assumed it was the normal Webasto not starting error. On checking, the normal Webasto error was logged, so I cleared it – but the lamp remained lit. Then it went out when I turned the lights off… and reappeared when I turned the lights back on.

No, as per the earlier post in this thread I used IPC My07(+), but your point makes good sense. Perhaps if I have another brave pill I'll use that one. That said, an indication of the lights being on (I leave them on Auto the whole time) might be handy. I'll see how irritiating the red light gets.

The Nanocom and MSV2 can also do it, but they will always have the FBH light on for lights on as well. Only Gap have the fix to stop it coming on.Bodsys Brake Bible
