Clunking noise on left turns

Hi all,

Thought I´d again see if I can dip down into this pool of knowledge.

I get a clunking noise on left turns only. Mostly at lower speeds and sharp(-ish) turns. Not always but often enough for it to be annoying. A round about would be a good example of it happening.

It´s like a snapping feel both on the turn and as the wheel goes back. It´s quite similar to the clunking noise made by worn out control arms.

I´ve taken the car to my local LR dealer as well as an independent LR specialist and none of them can see something wrong. The specialist said these noises can be expected from an 8 year old car.

To me however, this can´t be right....

Has anyone experienced anything similar and what was the issue?

Many thanks in advance!

Jonas

I have, but in a L405 Range Rover. That was the wrong lubricant in the front diff and there is a TSB about it which I can't find right now. But the way it was explained to me was that basically the wrong oil causes the clutches to grab and bind, and ultimately destroy themselves if left unrectified. I don't even know if the diffs are the same in a D4 and L405 but if I can find the TSB I will post it.

Here you go. Service bulletin LTB 00906V5

Is it an automatic?
I had something very similar happen with my D3 Auto, turns out it just needed the clutches in the gearbox re-aligning/resetting/repositioning (can't remember the exact terminology, sorry)

Have you had a leaky outer CV boot at some time? Does it happen in reverse?

It sounds from the description (if accurate) that it’s one of the outer CV joints that’s gone. Mine did it going forward but they say the way to test is to test it in reverse.

Google Knock on lock CV joint and see if you can test it. It shouldn’t take much effort to rule it out so no harm done if it’s not that.
