This morning I've just received What Van? Nov 06 magazine through my letterbox. In it is a small article on the D3 commercial. It states:
Discovery van available before end of year
Land Rover has confirmed it will build a light commercial vehicle version of the latest, third generation Discovery off-roader. The 4x4 van will retain the passenger car's five doors, but will be a two-seater. The rear door and rear side windows will be replaced with solid panels and a flat load floor will be installed. The conversion work will be carried out by Land Rover's SVO division. The LCV version will go on sale towards the end of the year, according to Land Rover's UK managing director John Edwards. Prices yet to be revealed for the Discovery van, but it will precede both a heavily revised Defender, to be powered by the new Ford Transit's 2.4-litre engine, and an LCV version of the latest generation Freelander.Matt

now you're going to have to watch out for white van man when off roading
If only they could make a three seater version and it still classed as commercial (i.e. claim VAT back), then I'd order one today.Matt

We’ve had a commercial version of the D3 here in Ireland since launch !!
They’re converted by the importers, with the rear seats being taken out, the foot well for the second row seats covered over to create a flat floor & the windows from the B pillar back blanked out.
In all previous versions of the Disco commercial, ie. TDi & TD5 the rear windows were taken out & replaced with colour coded panels. But in the D3 the windows seemed to be left in place, blacked out & blank panels fitted inside.
Naturally the electrics are disabled too.
All of this is a bit of a butcher job to be honest. But has been very popular here in Ireland, personally I would prefer a LR SVO version, but I doubt we’ll ever see that here.
The commercial conversions of cars / 4x4’s is nearly a national pastime in Ireland, & you can get a commercial version of just about any car / 4x4.
Right down to a Nissan Micra commercial & right through to BMW X5’s, VW Touregs & sadly Range Rover Sports & in one case I know of locally, a FF Range Rover
It’s one thing converting a Discovery or the like , but personally I think it’s hideous & a sacrilege to allow or promote the butchering of such high end vehicles. It just goes to show really, that we’ve got no class or taste in this island of ours

I like the way the floor is done with that board, the name of which escapes me at the moment.
I also really like the mesh guard behind the seats 8)
I didn’t know that you could get the “converted commercial†over in the UK

I have to say, that looks really smart! The mesh guard with the cut out to allow better visibility/access to the rear, looks to have been made by someone with a good idea of what's required, for a change! I've seen a few D3 commercial conversions (the Irish version, the Nene job, and one done by Ripon Landrover), and whilst they were all OK, this looks to be the mutz nutz!!
I had a D2 commercial company car (before they took it away from me!) and I loved that truck. If I could have recovered the VAT, I would have had a D3 commercial when I bought my own!!!Arctic Frost TDV6 5-seat

At least you will not have the annoying seats rattle

Rather don't order a tow hook on the commercial version, unless you order the tacho right away.

by the way, we can have a "commercial version" by just adding the metal wire divider and putting some reinforcing foil on the back windows (and MAINLY some papers with a lot of stamps).
It is still a 5 seater and the dividing fence is usually trown out (illegal but no real risk).
I wanted a 7 seater, which is impossible as a commercial version.
So about 90% of all range rovers, discos, cayennes, x5, touaregh etc are commercial vehicles here!

Wow, that looks quite neat.
It would be the perfect sort of vehicle for Outback travel in Australia for just two people.
There's so much stuff to bring along for an extended trip into the red centre, so we normally bring everything including the kitchen sink. Having all that room to put stuff into the vehicle would be awesome!
Too bad it's not available in Australia - simply because we don't have any tax breaks for a "commercial"
