Compmotive 18 vs OEM 17

Which do people think is better for serious off-roading? Probably paired with Coopers STT

Went through 6 AT tyres in the last 6 days with 19" and decided that they are just the wrong size and type for off-roading.

I run 17 with cooper st for playing on the rough stuff. If you can get away with 17’s, why go for 18’s ??

I have also gone through 19" Duratrac's, by slicing the side walls when off road, and they weren't that old either. Big Cry Went with the 18" compomotives as I had the Brembo conversion. I have Cooper STT's as well. Not looked back. Thumbs Up

the general view is that the more sidewall, the better for offloading - so I'd go with 17's over 18's if I could. I have a D4 and so need Compmotive 18's but they're much better than 19's off road.

17 for sure. Proper offroad tires start at /80, with 17" you can easily fit 245/70/17, starting with 265 you might have to watch if nothing on full lock or wheel full up.

Have a look at the mudtech4x4 site, they have 17" rims with proper load ratings. Cheap originals might be the way as well, you decide.

That said, i have no idea what kind of tire you prefer, and especially which sizes are available at the moment. I'd suggest to start with the tire.

I checked Mayerosch.at for BFG MT, and they don't even have 18" at the moment...

Time for the big spreadsheet i guess.

I had 265x70x17" GGat2s before Brembo. They were a great all round tyre, never had a problem Greenlaning. Now have 265x70x18" Cooper Discoverer AT2s on Compomotive wheels, again great for all types of road/track driving. Even after owning my D3 9years I can't stop the mods.

Where he lives, Mud is not the most important topic.

He probably needs super stable sidewalls, big bite on the sides as well, and the ability to air down for the sandy parts inbetween.

If money is of no concern, shop around for beadlock rims.

I ran OE Land Rover 18" rims on my D3 for a while, a brilliant combination IMO. Although for off-road use 17" rims will be superior.

However, with 18" rims, you can still fit the D3 V8 brake upgrade and for me 17" rims were just a little too roly-ploy on road.

I actually have a v8 with the big brakes as standard. Will that be an issue with getting 17 inch rims?

Yes, they won’t fit. 18” & up for V8s.

that's a game changer.

Find your tire first.

Remember to check if they will be rubbing on the inside on the frame ends. might need modification.

Spacers might help, but at the sam time might raise issues on the wheel arches wheel full up, especially with extrawide tires.

I'd rather go 205/110 than 285/35, so to speak.

most possibly not. How would spacers help with the bigger diameter of the brake?
