LR fitted an upgraded compressor from I think around 2007/8 made by the German manufacturer AMK.

I consider the AMK to be the better unit, BUT, it is a more complicated unit and does not lend itself to complete servicing/rebuild like the Hitachi does.

The Hitachi units are really simple and very easy to refurbish with everything available from 4x4 Airseals amongst others. There are more bits coming available for the AMK units too, but servicing the dual piston/con rod assy is very tricky and not advised for the DIY home mechanic. Piston crown and seal, as well as the drier assy are easy with one caveat, the very small screws holding the piston crown can snap off on removal leaving you in the dudu Laughing

That said, servicing the air drier solves most compressor issues (AMK or Hitachi) relating to C1A20-64 (too slow to fill reservoir) unless it has been allowed to overrun for long periods due to air leaks.

If you opt for an AMK unit you will need the pipe conversion kit, and a GAP IID to upload the software change as it has slightly different operating parameters. However, it will run on the original installed Hitachi software.

EDIT:
Dunlop also do an aftermarket version of the Hitachi unit, but BEWARE! There are many pretenders out there with cheap copies of both Hitachi and AMK and are total crap!!

The AMK is not an upgraded compressor to the Hitachi - it is just a different compressor that LR was forced to switched to after the Hitachi factory was damaged in a natural disaster and the compressors were no longer available.

Experience has shown the AMK not to be better that the Hitachi - is about the same but the Hitachi is more easily rebuilt - both have many cheap and nasty clones - so if a Hitachi fails then rebuild it - nice and cheap and works but with the AMK only buy a AMK brand (not a clone) - expensive.

My own experience in the 15 years I have owned and serviced my D3 is 3x Hitachi and 1x AMK and the AMK has lasted much longer than any of the Hitachi compressors.

But, as said, the Hitachi is easier and cheaper to service.

* first ran a bearing (design failure in original engine)
* second had a failure of the water outlet on top of the engine (pls check yours)
