Connecting a headphone 2.5 Jack to Auxiliary

For the technically adept ..............

I'd like to connect my E90 to the auxiliary using it for mooosic etc .

Rear of Cubby is out of bounds as there isn't a single cable there for anything.Even stripped the complete back off it in case they had secreted them somewhere I couldn't see otherwise.

Spliced onto rear of Head Unit is out of bounds as I already have the loom fitted for phone through speakers and I had soooooo much hassle fitting that I can't be arsed going there again TBH .

Last option is connecting a stereo jack ( 2.5 mm ?) into the E90 and them wiring it down to the plug in the passenger footwell.

Can someone spell it out for me what sort of cable I need .Can I get a length ( 1.5 m approx) with a 2.5 mm jack already fitted ?What do I do to connect it into the passenger block , I strand into red , one into blue , do I need a ground ( black ?) ?
Looking for it local around here would be akin to asking someone for a Nepalese Hinged Ballscratcher Confused

Quickest and easiest way would be to get a 2.5mm - 2.5mm extension lead.

Whip off one of the plugs and you will have 2 main wires and a shielded wire ( for the ground)

I used some of these



They fit nicely down the gap in the plug in the footwell...

So just lop off one end of the lead , fit one of the connectors above onto each strand ( left , right & ground) and the fit snug into the connector block in the footwell Wiggsy ?

Yep thats about it ...you should be able to get the 2.5 mm extension wire at most electrical stores

Well got the bits in Maplins yesterday..... 3 m of 4 strand shielded audio ( only need 3 but only stocked 4) , 1 X 2.5 stereo jack and a bag of female mini blade connectors.

Made up the loom , soldered the two audio strands and the earth into the 2.5 jack.Then stripped the other end of the cable and crimped & soldered a fem mini blade connector onto each of the three strands , left audio , right audio and finally earth.I then located the green connector block in the passenger footwell and plugged the corresponding blades into the block. Didn't work !

I stripped the block and took it to pieces and it turns out that even though the wires from the block leading to the radio are inserted, there aren't any internal blades fitted within the block.In otherwords when I plugged the 3 new connectors into the block I was just feeding them into a hole that didn't physically connect to the wires leading to the opposite side out to the stereo.

So all i did was release the existing 3 wires from the block and soldered the 3 wires from the cable directly to them.Heatshrink sleeve for protectionJob done.Lovely sound aswell !The cable was easily fished from the dash to the footwell .

i you would have asked, i would have told you they dont fit the pins to the comm models. soldering the wires is the only man.

Mine isn't a commercial Chris.Seems the rules aren't steadfast across the board , eg no wires in the centre console for anything , even heated seats & believe me I took the thing to bits looking for them

IS there not something about having to have the 3.5mm jack socket in the passenger centre console activated (i.e something plugged in) before this 'splicing' will work. I might be wrong - someone who knows will comment I'm sure.

apparently if you have a aux socket in the centre console then yes thats the case Alex.

I didnt mean there was the other half of the spade terminal there Surprised

I ment that the small female plugs fitted into the existing wireing ..basically push them in with the existing wiring ..(pushed in from the top of the plug as apposed to the bottom were you would expect them to go )

There was quite a big gap on mine ..thats why i used them crimps ..

Laughing no bother Wiggsy alls well that ends well.Had the internal blades been present thaey would have been a neat fit though , so technically you were unknowingly correct :thubsup:

There were one or two other wires leading into it aswell Wigss but not exiting out anywhere :confused:

ISTR , one black , one orange , might have been a green aswell.I should have taken a pic.

know what they are ?

There were a lot of green/white leading in and out aswell.

Dunno about the others..but the black is an earth according to the wiring diagram.

I only had the 3 aux wires in my plug ( as far as i can remember)

Also my plug was grey not green
