Considering replacing my D4... but what with?

Considering replacing my 2015MY D4 HSE but what with...

I’m genuinely unsure, more unsure than on any other previous car purchase. I test drove the D5 at the weekend and whilst lovely, I have reservations and it didn’t set me slight like the D4 did.

Is that because the jump to it isn’t as big as the jump from a 3 series to a D4 was in 2010. Would just love to hear from others looking at replacing or planning for that eventuality - and what will you replace with?

For me I need a BIG boot behind 2nd row, high seating position, smooth ride and presence on the road.

Considered the amazing discounts on the GLS but interior looks too old now to buy new. And the Q7 I don’t really like the look of - tried to see one at my local Audi dealer today and they didn’t have anything to look at, even second hand, and lead time is 9-10months! Not a Volvo man either!

I did spec a D5 online which looks pretty good, but the HSE I would really like is £68k and that’s a LOT, even with circa 4K knocked off.........

Thoughts / advice, please?

I’ve been in the same dilemma and am thinking the solution is a VW T6 synchro. However, I recently hire a Peugeot Traveller in Germany and was very impressed. It certainly made me think what I need.

Fortunately, I didn’t need so much boot space anymore but, for those that do, there only seem to be compromises out there Sad I’m not even sure that waiting is the right answer, as new cars could easily become significantly more expensive over the coming 12-18 months.

Sorry, but there don’t seem to be any easy answers to the challenge that LR’s design team have set us.

GLS in up for replacment and as such is an old roll out model.

However as DG has said I am 16 months into a D5 and can honestly say I have not regreted it at all. The car has been used solo, and 7 up with seven tall adults with no reported issues or moans about seating. I have towed with it and used it off road and can say that it is diffrent to the D4 but by no means inferior.
As for the bit about the step change between 3/4 being bigger than that between the 4/5, not sure what car you drove but as far as I am concerned the step change is bigger by far than between the 3/4

We all have different needs/requirements and of course different tastes. So there can’t be a definitive answer.
The D3/4 covers so many bases, hence the diversified membership here.
Personally, I haven’t found a vehicle that’s a direct replacement for the D4. I’m resigned to the fact that I’ll have to make several compromises with my next vehicle.
I’m currently thinking that in April 2019, when my D4 will be 3yrs old, I’ll buy a years warranty for it. I would hope that during 2019 we’ll have a good idea about the new Defender range. If that suits me, I’ll hang on for one.
If the Defender isn’t for me, then my thoughts are to either keep the D4 to use on the weekend and holidays and buy another vehicle to use for business. Or buy a used 2017 model FFRR SDV8.

An excellent low cost option would be to keep your excellent D4 - IMHO nothing better on the market at the moment and the change to electric will become cheaper as time moves on. Mind you I still think hydrogen cars are the way to go as electric are fundamentally more expensive to build and subsequently recycle......

This is becoming an interesting thread for me. My wife's small upholstery restoration business is getting busier. As a result, when we went away in the caravan this weekend, I had to raise the rear seats and refit the dog guard to the D4. The thing is, I can't remember the last time the seats were up!

So, it looks like we are mainly using it as a posh van now. My work is changing, so I will have very few long car journeys to do.

In fact, I'd better get off the internet and go and remove the guard and fold the seats again, 2 x sofa's to collect....

The sloping rear and smaller boot opening of the D5, wouldn’t be any good for your sofa shifting and the FFRR seats don’t fold flat. ☹️

You are right. The sofa only just fits in the D4, with the front seats further forward than I would have them normally.

Having said that, for smaller furniture the D5 could have the remote seat fold option, meaning I could fold it without leaving my desk Thumbs Up

Sadly the electrically deploy-able dog guard doesn't exist just yet. Come on Mr McGovern, you missed a trick there.....

I am in same position as OP and LT. I had a 3.0 d5 for 3 days as a loaner but couldn't get convinced. Ended up taking out an extra year's warranty and doing a gearbox flush. decision kicked down the road....I expect that I will end up keeping the d4 for things it is best at, and getting something else smaller for everyday use.
