Coolant level drops on starting car |
|
Hi all.
I'm having an odd problem with my coolant level. I've topped the resovoir up correctly when the engine is cold and it is sitting at the right level. On starting the car from cold, the level initially appears fine and no 'low coolant' warning is seen on the dash.
Within about 2-3 mins of driving, I tend to see the 'low coolant' warning on the dash. This tends to remain for about 2 mins before disappearing. I don't to see the warning again unless the car sits and idles for a long period when warm.
Any ideas?

Assuming when you recheck physical level I'd still ok ... which should eliminate airlock being the cause ... Is your coolant 50/50 antifreeze and water? If not, syphon a couple of litres out and add neat antifreeze. The sensor needs the mix to have right density. .

Didn't realise that about the antifreeze mix effecting the float, thanks for that.
The coolant bottle was changed about 2 years ago. The old one gave a constant low coolant warning. Do people think this intermittent warning could be a faulty float sensor?

I think the top 1/4 of the rad needs to be empty for the sensor to genuinely trigger.
So I can't see that due to a fluctuation.
