Well to update you all. The car has apparently being sorted.
Turns out that mechanic number 2 says the EGR valves were fault hence the actuator seized. Now released acurator and 2 EGR valves replaced and car is fine.
Going to pick up Monday

This is great news!
As I'm in the same boat, please keep us updated on how it's driving today!

Right everyone.
The car has made it back on the road after 6 weeks of being off road and going from pillar to post with mechanics.
Drive is completely normal. Acceleration is fine. Power is there. Smoke gone. So appears to have been resolved.
End diagnosis and cure was accuator stuck alongside 2 EGR valves being faulty. Replaced with valves and released ceased accuator.
Warranty dealt with cost.

I had black smoke and loss of power. Petrifies it was the turbo. Graywalls in Abridge Essex simply replaced a split rubber hose which, as it's quite a common fault they carry in stock. All good now

I guess the lesson here is not to keep driving it until things get worse!

Need advice! - Update on my Turbo |
|
Please could someone help advise here.
Summary:
Land rover engine stopped (no CEL/oil pressure warnings apart from some smoke) and engine cut out, Four weeks after major service.
Topped up with oil, and engine ran but rough.
Seemed to be a slightly “knocking” from bottom half of engine.
Diagnosed by two garages as turbo.
So it’s been with Risborough Services for two months now!
The nice lads there are not experts LRs or most things really so had to outsource the engine to a more experienced mechanic!
Well they sent him just the crank, which he says it absolutely fine.
So this is where we are.
Garage are saying what do I want to do? - They give me feeling now they want rid - saying well we only said we'd replace turbo, we didn't promise to fix your engine. In reality we agreed they would check engine to fault find the knock - which I understand it a bit open ended.
And I am not sure what to say, so wondered what some LR experts here thought before I get a call from their engine expert to advise.
• Should I get them to simply swap turbo and rebuild the engine? - hope it's ok?
• Is there some other trouble shooting you would recommend?
• Can they at least swap out some cheaper components like bearings/seals/sometihng else when they rebuilt it
which might maybe cure it?
• Something else I should advise them to check or do?
Thanks!

I would have thought that after all the historic discussion on here, about spun bearings and incorrectly fitted and crushed oil filters, that someone could have put 2 and 2 together, and thought that so soon after a service, maybe just check the filter?
If it's the same garage that have stripped your engine down and sent just the crank away, that serviced it, then I would be concerned.
From what your saying, it sounds like a knackered turbo is the least of your problems. If you've got a knackered engine, they are generally not repairable as far as I know.
Best course would be to get it moved to someone who knows the D3/4 and its characteristics.
Sorry, but it's not sounding good from your description.

Thanks! But no it's a different garage. I was away, we realised we needed an MOT within a day were desperate so my wife took it to a Halfords Autocentre.

Sorry when you say knackered, can you explan a bit more please!
Like if there is a tapping or knocking noise - you mean in general it's always terminal?
Obviously if it overheated and head is warped or things like that I get it, but some things must be repairable, like if a gasket blows it can be replaced, or you can smooth and seal/bore new cylinders?
So annoying, this engine's only done 12k and is under 2 years old.

oh dear.
yeah no point in replacing a turbo. Not gonna fix a knocking noise.
Is the engine still in the car ?
I think you need a local expert.

Sounds like your engine is FUBAR. Halfords will not be able to solve this. You need to get it to a good independent for a proper diagnosis. DO NOT go anywhere near EBAY engine repairers or other specialists that say they can rebuild it. They can't because you can't get the parts. Your only option is a donor engine from a Jag or another Discovery.

Thanks for the advice, sorry I know it's a lot of info - but it's not with Halfords (they just did a service) but it's at a local 4x4 specialist which was recommended to me earlier in this post by another forum user who is local.
Unfortunately disco mike and others were not available at the time

I think bottom end parts are available on ebay now.
But they are several thousand pounds.

The engine can be rebuilt - i rebuilt mine.
All parts can be sourced although some take some finding.
New crank, bearings, rods, pistons, rings, oil pump. all oil seals etc etc.
Price of crankshafts have gone up but still available at reasonable price if you look hard enough.
Crankshafts are also now available from China, and before anyone goes on about cheap Chinese parts blah blah blah, if you source correctly they are good and as good as any.
Volvo is now Chinese as well.
