Couple of Questions, Just bought LR3 |
|
Hello,
I recently bought a used 05 HSE with 16k Miles on it. I have really been impressed with the vehicle. It is super nice. Can't wait to go offroad.
I have a couple of questions that I wanted to clarify.
1. After searching, it seems others have had the transmission "tip in/out" that gives you a nice jerk when coming from a roll stop. From what I've seen it looks like this is something that hasn't been fixed by landrover. Is that correct? I would assume there is a firmware upgrade for this...
2. I'm not sure if I have the locking rear diff. option. I would assume not since the spare tire isn't the alloy spare. I suppose I can crawl under to be sure... How useful is the locking rear diff? How much more effective is it off road compared to not having it? I have seen a couple of impressive off road videos (by penguin). Just wondering if it's something that makes a big difference. I would assume the traction control system acts as sort of a locking methodology at times.
Thx in advance. Very nice site for the LR3. The nicest so far...

Neither of your questions are in my area of knowledge, but I hate to see such a post go un-answered for so long!
Welcome to the forum and I am sure you will not miss the rear diff.

Hi Tromer,
I have a D3 HSE auto and I have been moaning about this soft clunk since somewhere near day 1. The local dealer's D3 auto does not do it. Into the garage on Tuesday then off on a long haul to Austria with caravan weighing 1700 kgs. 3,750 lbs to you in the States. I will keep you in the picture. I suspect it will get worse but we shall see.

Does the rear end come standard with at least a limited slip?

Nope! The locking diff doesn't seem to make that much difference, but there will be occasions where the TC system can't replicate the locking diff principle if you see what I mean. Slimer has one on his so perhaps his view might be better. I guess it will depend on the off road terrain you are driving, in the US you might be rock crawling a lot something we don't have much of in the UK. Perhaps the Aussies can give their view as their terrain is perhaps more like yours. DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

no limited slip... Surprising in deed. I guess I will find out just how effective the traction control is..

The locking rear diff does make a difference in some conditions, we've proved it a couple of times. D3s still blooming capable without it though The End

traction control is a brilliant tool, but obviously only comes in once traction is lost, whereas a variable slip diff (which is what the rear 'locking' diff is) will prevent, or help to prevent, loss of traction in the first place.
Slimer's right, it doe make a difference, noticable in two ways, one is the lack of TC 'help' and the other is the continuity of traction - often combined with momentum - where TC would be of no use
