Cracked calipers

Hi all.

I’ve had a quote from my local Indy to replace discs and pads all round.
He said that I need to replace the calipers as well as they will crack with new discs.

Has anyone heard of this before?? Or is he trying to pull a fast one.

Thanks in advance

Unless they can't undo the caliper bolts without damaging the calipers I'd say they've been breathing too much brake dust.

Have a read of Bodsy's brake bible, it tells you all you need to know to replace the brakes front and rear.

I've never ever heard of brake calipers cracking when fitting new discs.

Hmmm thought as much.

He’s done a few jobs for me over the years, his work is perfect. However, a few little things have got me thinking that perhaps I need to find a new Indy.

Leaving the under body protection off for one and letting me drive down home without it

How far North of Cardiff are you?

I've known Hugh Haines in the Hill Rally scene for years and he's based in Caerphilly.

I’ll given him a ring but He’s too exspensive fir my liking but certainly knows his stuff.

I downloaded Bodsys bible years ago and knew I’d never seen or heard anything about this in there.

I think you need to ask for a better explanation.. it might have lost something on the way out of spanner mans mouth Rolling Eyes . If he can’t explain or won’t explain you will have your answer. But in any case keep asking till you get an answer that you understand..... you are paying the bill after all.

Sticking caliper might cause over heating, lead to rapid wear and in extreme cases to a cracking on discs.

I've heard and seen cracked discs but not calipers, sure you've got it right?

Yup he said callipers, on the rear especially!

Ive heard of trouble with discs warping/cracking but never callipers. I explained that its only got 44K on the clock but he said it was a year thing all vehicles over 2010 and even some 2012 vehicles callipers were cracking Shocked Shocked

I think ill tackle them myself but if I do do any of you recommend changing the handbrake shoes also??

Were some early D4's fitted with alloy rear calipers or am I thinking of another vehicle?

Perhaps he's getting confused with the different callipers fitted on the rear, still not down to cracking though, just should not mix them.

Calipers can be swapped from alu to steel. Cheaper to replace both that way than a single alu caliper...
