Cracked Windscreen Saga

Had the dreaded cracked windscreen last week so I contacted my insurance company who have a prefered windscreen company - National Windscreens (NW).
Contacted NW and arranged for a replacement screen to be fitted.
I then searched this forum to see if anyone had used NW before, lots of problems reported here so I decided I would take lots of photographs of my existing screen (just in case).

I noted several issues with windscreen companies fitting non-genuine Land Rover screens, so I contacted the NW Local depot to ask which screen they were going to fit, they said and AGC one.
I said I was concerned about this because of the horror stories I had read on this forum about non-genuine screens causing problems and I was told that AGC are excellent screens and there would be no problem with it.

New screen was fitted at the depot because it was raining, on the way home I noted my auto wipers were not working and on closer inspection I also noted the top trim was distorted and the bottom cowling trim was not sealing against the screen (gap between seal and screen).

I also noted that the rain/light sensor was only touching the screen on one side hence the reason why my auto wipers were not working.
I remove the rear view mirror and rain sensor to find that one of the retaining clips had been badly distorted rendering it useless for holding the sensor flat to the screen.
Fortunately, I was able to repair the retaining clip and on refitting sensor found my auto wipers working once more.

Next I turned my attention to the top and bottom windscreen seals and from looking at my photos it was obvious the screen had been fitted too low on the body.
The gap at the top of the screen was too big and the bottom cowling was unable to go far enough back to make a seal because the position of the screen was preventing it from doing so.

With a gaping gap between the screen and the bottom cowling seal it was obvious that any water running down the screen was going through this gap and causing god knows what other problems.

I plugged in my IID Tool and found a new fault had been recorded approximately 30 minutes after I had left the NW depot, the fault registered is:
U0241-00 (2C) Lost Communication with the headlamp control module A - Triggered on 10-11-2018 15:05:06 - At 34974km

I have now insisted that NW replace this AGC screen with a genuine LR one and at this point in time I am in conflict with them because they just want to refit the AGC screen.

I have registered a complaint with NW and my insurance company - Hastings Direct

My advice for anyone having a screen replaced is Take Loads of Photos before they start.

I have included some images of before and after.

Must admit I have a nice chip on the window that will need doing at some point, but stories like this fill me with dread...

Hope you get it sorted.

I'm not sure what you mean when you state you've had a new screen bottom seal.
The lower part of the windscreen butts up to the scuttle panel which has a crude seal in the top of it but it's not a replaceable component.
Have you had a replacement scuttle panel included in the windscreen swap?

What I meant was that the existing bottom panel where it was refitted to the New Screen

Your problem seems to be incompetent fitting rather than a non genuine LR windscreen. I understand you rather have a genuine one, but was this not an option, albeit at a higher excess, at the time you arranged a replacement?

Personally, I’ve had aftermarket ones and never had a problem.

No I wasn't given a choice when I placed the order, I naively believed it would be a genuine LR one.

The problem I have now is.. if the fault code (U0241-00 (2C) Lost Communication with the headlamp control module A) is being caused by the bad fitting of a non-genuine LR screen and I have to take the car to a LR Dealer (still under warranty), will LR void my warranty because the screen is not a genuine LR One?
I have read on this forum that this can happen.

99% of insurance companies will not replace a windscreen with a branded LR one unfortunately. They have a bit in the T&C’s that state they will punt you off to Autowindscreens or similar who will fit a “windscreen” for your £75 excess, but if you wish to arrange your own replacement the windscreen replacement, the excess shoots up to something approaching rrp for the thing, well it does on my insurance and plenty of others.

First of all Land Rover do not make windscreens.
What they fit as standard is a Pilkington Opti-kool (sp).
Your best hope is for a Pilkington Opti-kool but it probably won't have a LR brand applied as it's after market and not factory fit. Wink

Is your current screen a Pilkington or a cheapo copy?

Yep, I agree with Narpy.

There was only one time I got a LR branded replacement screen and that when a FL2 had a problem with the black bits on the edges of the windscreen coming away from the glass. It was accepted as a warranty issue and the dealership ordered up a LR replacement screen which was then fitted by Autowindscreens.

As I said in my post they have fitted an AGC screen, AKA Cheapo Copy

I have just spoken with Land Rover Customer Service department at Land Rover head office.
They have confirmed that the fitting of any parts to a LR Vehicle that is under LR warranty has the potential to void the warranty.

Did you mention it was a replacement windscreen?

You could argue it’s the same with tyres not exactly as supplied. Sorry, but I don’t think you were given a correct answer, just one you were hoping might give you leaverage with the insurance company.

Yes, I explained the exact scenario to Land Rover Customer Service.
The insurance company has already agreed to have the screen replaced with a genuine LR one as soon as NW admit it has not fitted the AGC screen correctly.
So the insurance company are not a problem.
Incidentally, I was told by my insurance company that I could have taken my vehicle to any company of my choice, they would have simply added £10 to my excess charge, so £95 instead of the £85 I paid NW.
