Having just done done 500 miles today I got a split second hiccup 10 miles from home, it was so quick like a blink but it definitely happened like the car stalled for a millisecond. She carried on driving all the way home with no issues but having looked around the forum this seems like the sensor issue. My car is 2010 so in the vin range needing the trigger wheel as well I was just saying today how reliable she is today.
My questions are:
1. Could this not be the crankshaft sensor, maybe just a freak thing. I just don't want to stall doing 70 with my family in the car. I know a slightly silly question but any advice welcome.
2. Will I have any joy in any financial help from LR as its in the larger earlier vin range, I know its not a recall, The cars last 2 services have been carried out my a local garage to me so not LR.
3. Does the body need to come off? some say yes and some say just gearbox out?
4. My local garage is good but not a LR expert, I doubt he's done one before, would I be mad trusting him or should I go to LR, also does he need a special tool to line it up???
5. Can any body recommend somebody near Twickenham that could do it, I'm also in the 7 year belt range very soon so was thinking maybe do the whole thing at once...I might need a mortgage though
6. I have also read that if I can find the older crankshaft sensor that I already have and don't put in the newer type then I don't need to change the trigger wheel, does any body know the part number for the old one and where I might be able to get one.
Thanks in advance

You need to get it confirmed as to what exactly it is. I don't think one hiccup qualifies it for a sensor problem. It may be, if so it will continue with increasing frequency and then there should be an error code which the AA or a garage can read.
I didn't think any of the 2010's were effected by the crankshaft sensor, thourght the VIN range was 2012/2013?
As with anything major, it's always worth asking LR for a contribution, but they look more favourably if you've had the car from new, had it serviced at a main dealer etc.
No the sensor isn't body off, neither is the ring, but there's some debate on the latter. If LR were to make a contribution, it would have to be main dealer that repaired it, they won't part finance an Indy.
Sorry, don't know anyone in your neck of the woods, but a Google search on LR, garage and the name of your area should bring up a few.

Quite common on lots of makes of cars, normal actions are approx 10 miles into journey with engine at full temp it tries to die or dies totally, allow to cool and it may get you home before stopping again.

Yes but the TSB on crankshaft sensors refers to a batch on the 2012/13 MYs.

My car is 2010 so not part of the 2012/13 recall, But there was a bulletin saying between certain vin numbers that mine is in that the trigger wheel needs to be replaced as well as the new sensor is not compatible with my existing trigger wheel which is a shame.
I'm trying to work out the facts to get it fixed before it lets me down miles away from home with a car full family.
Thanks

Make sure you have a good recovery policy.
One that gets you and your family either home or to where you are going and gets the car to wherever you want it to go.
That costs money but give you peace of mind when you have kids on board Stew,
2010 D4 gone but I really loved it

And if you don't already, I'd get the insurance of Warranty Direct

Hi mate, it's a tricky sum really, had the car 2.5 years with no issues so I think I'm still quids in and I'm due to pay a bit to fix something. I think I may get belts done at same time as coming up to 7 years.
I'll carry on with the gamble of no warranty, it would be an interesting poll to see if people do warranty cover or not? I may do one!

If it is the sensor and trigger wheel, the WD cover will be cheaper, one years cover wll be the cheaper option, only sticking point is iirc, it will be three months before you can claim.

its too late on this repair, maybe in the future as I intend to keep the car for many years. Its always easy in hindsight. Hope all is going well with yours
