D3 2009 Auto gearbox problem

Hi My Discovery 3 2009 has decided to stick in reverse gear (reverse lights on and showing r on the dash), the gear shift is stuck in park and won't move and the key will not remove from the ignition. The car was running fine up to this point having just completed a 100 mile journey! The fault occurred on the drive just after I had unhooked the trailer and was going to pull away! Any ideas as to the cause and remedy would be appreciated. Many Thanks in advance

Sounds like the linkage may be seized?

That’s my view as well.

Try to force the gear lever more aggressively from drive to park.

sounds to me as if the electrics think it in reverse
but the lever is in Park.

Solonoid may not be activating (hence why stuck in park) - If the trim is lifted there is a manual release tab

Linkage could be disconnected.

Hi Thank you, That was my guess so I had removed the TAB which allows you to insert your finger and press the lever which releases the Auto Gear shift.

Having completed that task and moved to N or R or P etc it makes no difference, the reverse lights still stay on and key will still not release! (i also tried removing battery terminal to reset, which made no difference).

Referring to your previous mail, would you know which solonoid and it's location that needs replacing? (appreciate your assistance as I am not mechanically minded).

Regards

don't sound like a solonoid needs replacing.

Sounds like the plastic gearbox cover needs removing (4 bolts)
and the cable inspecting to see if loose.

But if you don't think you are upto that, maybe best to call a garage or mobile D3 person on here.

Make sure your location/town is known

Hi,

Getting to that linkage is fairly easy possibly even with the car stuck on your drive if you have long arms, I followed this thread

https://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/autobox-gea...31656.html

I replaced my linkage as it was sticking and causing some odd driving behaviour. Either try to free it with some WD40 and then replace when you can get onto some ramps (the replacement parts about £20). It could be the solenoid etc, but the linkage is fairly easy to get to so worth the first try.
