I agonised for ages before going from 3 to 4... one of the biggest problems is the 4 isn't different enough!
In the end it was all about the sweet engine for me... and the fact that my old 3 was wearing out!

So am I, I can only afford it as I'm a pensioner ........... My navy pension pays for the car, no way I could afford it otherwise. Joined the BMWX5 45e group

Save your money. Enjoy the D3. Its basically the same car.
I avoided the 7 year service by p/x for the D4 - a rather expensive option
I still use my father in laws D3 and as much as I still love the drive of the D3 , the D3 doesn't really compare at all to the D4, power, comfort, looks etc.D4 2010 HSE Santorini Black
D3 2005 SE Java Black - p/x to D4
D2 2001 GS - p/x to D3
D1 1998 - p/x to D2

No comparison in my opinion. Although they share the same shape, they are completely different beasts in terms of refinement, handling, power delivery, economy and street cred.
Something new was breaking on a weekly basis on my D3 and that's fine if you like tinkering. But when stuff like your air suspension compressor goes, you know it's time to trade the old dear in for a younger fillie.
Yes, a heck of a lot of money to part with, but if you get something, say a year old, and the right spec and miles, you won't regret it.If in doot, flat oot!!

Is the D4 proving to be a more reliable beast? Have they changed so much that went wrong with the D3 (I won't list all the known common things here!) ?

Well, I can't speak of my latest D4, as I've only owned it 3 weeks, but so far so good (other than draining the battery, but we think that's an acknowledged issue with a known fix).
But the GS I had from brand new, only really had one fault in the 15 months I had it and that was when the electric windows started playing up. Then again, as that was one of the first D4's off the production line, I would like to think much of the early teething problems with the new model, have now been resolved.
In many ways, and I know many D3 owners argue against this, but I feel that it's a complete different car. Almost like when Ford changed the older style Mondeo (rounded shaped one) for the new one (squad shaped). It was like night and day and almost as if they had found a new design team and engineering department. Everything seemed so much better in terms of build quality, functionality and refinement.
The D3 is a sound vehicle, but in this modern era of having to compete with the X5's, Q7's and even emerging Eastern countries who are bringing out affordable and reliable 4x4's, the D4 was very badly needed for LR and imho, has seen a resurgence in their sales in the UK across their range.
God, I sound like a sales rep If in doot, flat oot!!

Yes I can understand that from a marketing and sales POV, nicer interior, stronger engines, freshened bodywork. I was thinking more in terms of engineering components. What are the major differences between the 2 disregarding engine and gearbox. Suspension compressor, EPB, sunroof drains, wire chafing, suspension bushes, alternator etc, have these items been upgraded or replaced to better more reliable units?
