D3 feels like a cut and shut, TD5 rear and D3 front |
|
If I'm honest I noticed it more when I fitted the twin tow kit and changed the 20" stormers for factory fit 18"ers [all 18" ers balanced before fitting] but over the last month the rear of the car is far, far noisier than the front.
It's far more obvious over the slightest of bumps, nothing from the front and a whole heap of racket from the back.
I know you're thinking rear ARB but it's not a clunk or similar noise.
It just sounds a whole lot louder at the back and it's not low-end either, the only way I can describe it is as though there's something in the boot area banging, bashing and rattling about when I drive over a discarded cigarette but on my mechanics advice I've stripped everything out; boot liner, rear load cover etc. but it's still there.
To be honest the only reason I sold my td5 was because it felt like a tractor and I'm beginning to worry this is going the same
Could it be the shocks?
I could do with someone locally [Yorkshire] have a listen, and maybe taking me out for a run in theirs [54-56 plate] to see the difference.
Cheers. D3 incl. genuine glass windscreen, front bi-focal headlights, full width rear bumper, self levelling washer bottle contents and audible 'tick tock' indicator stalk

Is it something easily identified on a ramp because the mechanic I have great respect for took it out for a spin with me and, like I say, his first suggestion was drive it empty and see if it goes away.
It certainly doesn't seem to drive any different but it isn't the same ride as when I bought it in December, I'm sure of that.
I'm also sure I can't live with it. D3 incl. genuine glass windscreen, front bi-focal headlights, full width rear bumper, self levelling washer bottle contents and audible 'tick tock' indicator stalk

If the bushes on the rear arms are worn then a good mechanic should be able to tell you the difference between good ones and bad ones. I couldn't tell you as I've never changed them or seen them from new.

Thanks.
He's a sports and 4x4 specialist although more the Dicovery 1/td5 era.
Still, I trust he can do it and if he can't he tells me before I book anything in.

That's a fair point but something I thought of afterwards as a result of having to drop it to fit the twin electric kit.
I thought it was a dead cert as to the cause until the mechanic laid under it and gave it a good shove around but it didn't budge.
EDIT.
Having said that, I wonder if I've been a little gentle in tightning the spare wheel, I did tighten it as much as I could but I bet it doesn't need much to move up and down ever so slightly D3 incl. genuine glass windscreen, front bi-focal headlights, full width rear bumper, self levelling washer bottle contents and audible 'tick tock' indicator stalk

Harmonic Dampers seized perhaps - give s a very harsh ride if they don't swing freely.
Daft point but do you have a removable towbar and if so how and where do you have it stored - heavy old lump that if moving around could well make a racket for sure...........

I've just been out and checked the spare wheel and it's going nowhere, very secure.
I've also checked the big swinger block thingies, they're swinging freely although do catch on the back trim if you swing them hard enough.
I've also checked the rear tow bar and that's still in my garage thirty miles away [but thanks for the suggestion, a good idea] D3 incl. genuine glass windscreen, front bi-focal headlights, full width rear bumper, self levelling washer bottle contents and audible 'tick tock' indicator stalk

Jack up a rear wheel and give it a good shake. If it waves around its the joints on the rear arms.
If they don't Tony

Thanks rugged.
Transformer,
The tyres are wrangler HP 255 60 R18 all round, tread is fine, one new tyre on rear a fortnight ago but two months after I put the 18's back on.
Front wheels are fine over small and large bumps, just what I would expect.
Just to be clearer, it's the same noise from the front immediately after going over a pothole magnified five times and obviously a split second later D3 incl. genuine glass windscreen, front bi-focal headlights, full width rear bumper, self levelling washer bottle contents and audible 'tick tock' indicator stalk

Rear hub bushes worn?
Jack up the rear wheel and get z big lever in between the tyre and ground and lever up and down. You may need a 2nd person to lever the wheel while you check the bushes from in behind the wheel.
If they are really bad, you can see the wheel moving up and down on the hub My D3 Build Thread

Okay.
So I got home and lowered the spare wheel and re-tightened.
I've been out twice since and there seems to have been a noticeable difference, albeit only on ten minute journeys.
Trouble is I'm now paranoid and don't know whether every slight noise from the rear is normal or not
For the sake if it I'm gonna get it booked in for MKS to gave a good poke around but I'm a lot happier than I was, if not a little embarrassed although in my defence the wheel would not move when both myself and the mechanic tested it.
Maybe it wasn't aligned properly.
Anyway, thanks again all, I'll update in a week when it's been looked over D3 incl. genuine glass windscreen, front bi-focal headlights, full width rear bumper, self levelling washer bottle contents and audible 'tick tock' indicator stalk

When my spare wheel was slightly loose, it made quite a noticeable thud
