d3 POLYBUSH suspension bushes replacement |
|
Has anyone had experience good or bad on the POLYBUSH replacement bush kits - about £350 from various 4x4 mail order outlets. Are they worth it - I am chasing bushes nearly every month - should have just changed all of them when the first ones started to go. Car is a 05 TDV6 WITH 80,000 miles on clock - part of my problem is we live down a rough lane and a lot of the local lanes are pot holed. Any feedback gratefully received.

Christyler has put them in a while back, might be worth a pm to him.
.... did you use the search function above as I think he's made a few comments on them here since. A happy childhood ... is the worst possible preparation for life.

I've started doing them based on the ARB bush performance. I had the rear ARB bushes replaced with genuine LR because of rattling over rough ground and did the fronts with poly. Rears are rattling after only 3 months but fronts are still fine.
We also live on a rough lane so have the same issues as you. Going to replace all of the rest with poly ASAP now.

New bushes. I was offered the spacers but formed the opinion that if the bush is designed properly they shouldn't be required.
3 months on and I now understand that they are required which kind of tells me the OE bush is not right. This was the final decider for polybushes really since a few of the others are saggy (45k miles) and I don't want to do the job twice.
That's not to say they're right for everyone though. I live down an un-made road, tow quite a lot, go off road with shooting etc. If it stayed on tarmac all the time and I didn't tow a lot I think I would probably use OE bushes complete with spacers.

Can't comment on the D3 but my experience with polybushes on my defender wasn't very good. They tend to produce less articulation and a harder ride . Also if they take a very hard knock they tend to deform and need to be replaced as they will not regain their shape like OE rubber ones do . Also they did not last as long as the OE ones .

Yes, I'd tend to agree with that. My old Deafener was not good on poly red although blue were a much nicer ride. Never had the deforming problem though. Also worth remembering that the D3 is a lot heavier so the red compound will not seem as harsh as it does in a Defender.
Plus of course the D3 has independent suspension all round and a lot less of the ironwork which makes the Defender suspension what it is - agriculturally biased rather than road biased.
Personally I wouldn't poly a defender again but I have had better experience on other vehicles such as Jaguars which were vastly better on poly but this just shows that there are a lot of variables. Different people, different cars, different requirements etc all factor into the decision.

I've struggled finding anyone else with the same suspension problems as I've experienced, but reading the above posts, this is exactly what went wrong with mine. Again I live down an unmade road bumpy road and got the knocking at 50k. Replaced some of the rear bushes ( the 3 most accessable) as the forth appeared fairly solid when using a bar to lever it, but after only 2 months the problem has returned and also a simlar knock has appeared on the front.
I've found a chap in Hebden Bridge that replaces them at what seems a very reasonable price (well by comparison to the rip off price from LR), but having had the problem reoccur once I was also toying with the idea of poly bushes. Could anyone let me know where you source them?
Many thanks
Jack

I just went to their website but a number of 4x4 specialists also sell them. About 400 quid for the complete kit.

Just thought - maybe one of the site sponsors could help. Someone like TFC might be able to supply and fit - have a look through the various links.

Thanks for the posts - we are currently in Germany on holiday so no rough road driving. Just before we left, I changed the rear anti roll bar bushes so some of the rattle has gone. I replaced the rear upper arms about 14,000 miles ago and recently had the front lower arms done after an accident under the insurance ( i was not paying!!!) I think that I will wait until the next lot of bushes start to play up and polybush the whole car - hopefully by then, the bush kits will be cheeper!!!!!!!

PS -The D3 has to be the safest vehicle i have even driven in these current snow conditions - no slip, wheel spin or worry - we came down through Berkshire, Surry and Sussex to Dover on 6 Jan when most trucks had got stuck and driving on packed snow was all you could get -- very impressed. Only problem was not having heated washer jets!!!!!! Chris Bowler
