D3 REVERSING CAMERA AND MONITOR FROM SCRATCH
Hi Guy's
Still feeling my way around the site and might have posted in the wrong place earlier. If I may, I will post again here hopefully I'm in the right street now!
I'm wondering if anyone has fitted a reversing camera and monitor from scratch to a D3?
My D3 is a commercial, and does not have a factory monitor. So I'm looking to fit a rear "wired" camera that can see the tow hitch, and a monitor that will fill the dash space of the factory unit. I have seen the cam that fits into the number plate lamp, but don't know if it can see the tow hitch! Any ideas or suggestions greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Den

I fitted the number plate version. Wiring takes time and requires some effort, then running cable to front of vehicle - I had to add some to the existing. I can just see a bit of the standard towbar as I purchased a wide angle version of the camera. Keep in mind there are two versions of camera, a PAL and a NTSF. I bought the PAL version as that is what my monitor required so buy a camera to suit the monitor. I triggered mine by wiring into the reverse lamp. I picked up power from the trailer fuse box in the LH rear corner. Hope this gives you some ideas.

Hi Globetrotter
Thanks for the advice, I've been looking at different alternatives for the camera, but in order to keep it hidden it seems my only option is to fit a bullet camera alongside the number plate lamp. I could tilt this to the required view by making an angled collar and sliding the camera into it. The system would be powered from the monitor so no need for wiring at the camera.
I was hoping someone on the forum could suggest a camera which would fit the tailgate handle, and give a view of the tow hitch.
Thanks again for your suggestions

most people fit something like this under the handle:
They can be adjusted loads, where as the number plate light type are fixed

Hi Pete,
I like the look of that thanks!! All I need to do is check the monitor compatibility and that might do nicely!
Thanks again

Hi Mikey b
I haven't purchased a kit yet as I'm still looking at a suitable monitor, but it seems reasonably straightforward.
My plan is to route the cable from the monitor, under the dash and up the A pillar behind the airbag. (be very careful here not to foul the airbag operation!!) Then along the inner lip of the headlining. Once at the rear you will need to pop out the rearmost interior lamp, and the plastic trim which covers the tailgate brake lamp.(see pic)
After that, it should be possible to route the cable through the ribbed rubber cable tube, and follow the wiring to the tailgate handle. You might also have to remove the lower trim below the glass to access the handle but I'll post on this in detail when I have it done. In my case I will only use a camera which is powered by the monitor. There are two reasons for this. 1. This setup will not cause any can-bus issues by placing additional load on the lighting circuits. (Although as its a commercial D3 so I don't think the lights are monitored as with the standard car) 2. I will not require a trigger lead when I select reverse, all I will need do is turn on the monitor. This has another advantage in that I can see whats happening behind me whilst towing by the press of a button! The monitor itself will be powered from the Accessory switched side of the ign. eg the rear of the cigarette lighter
Well, that's the theory anyway, of course life's never that simple so I won't be surprised if all the aforementioned goes tits up!
