D3 service costs
Hi,
I currently have a series 2 Disco and I'm thinking of upgrading to a D3 (probably about 5 years old) but my local independent LR garage warns of high service costs - mainly relating to regular replacement of suspension and steering components.
I will be using the car for general family use and regular trips of 500 miles or so towing a 1500kg trailer.
Would appreciate any advice on this?
Thanks
Laurie

A service is every 15k miles or every 12 months (whichever occurs first).
I had a minor service done at a dealership and I thought the cost was quite reasonable - about £300.00 (please note though that I have just gone from a Porsche, so probably got used to the rip off prices from Porsche Dealerships! ).
If you go to a LR Independant Specialist it should be even more cost effective.
Obviously it is a big car, and at around £30-40k brand new, D3 parts are going to be more expensive than they are for a Vauxhall Corsa say.
My advice would be to take a warranty out with a 3rd party (Warranty Direct or the like) and go from there.
However, it might be worth noting - if you get to the stage were you can't get a warranty on a D3, it's probably best to move on...

D3 service costs will vary considerably, the upper end will be the 'main dealer' with labour costing anything up to £150/hr - while the independant will be at the £75 (or lower) mark
The basic service consists of very little (as is common with most modern cars) and will be a engine oil change, oil filter, pollen filter and air filter (not all filters are change at each service) the rest of the service really consists of basic functionality checks
I use a indy for all the major stuff, doing the engine oil and filters etc myself, my local indy does not have the posh showroom, or leather sofa or free coffee etc . . so . . you really get what you pay for Never get mad - get even !!
06 D3 now gone to family member and still going strong at 265k
previous vehicles:
04 D2 TD5 - (clocked 189k from new)
52 X-Trail 2.2 SVE
various euro boxes !

D3 SErvice costs
Many thanks for the very helpful answers.
It wasn't so much the general servicing costs, which I appreciate will vary from main dealer to independent, but the comment from my own specialist that D3s eat up suspension and steering components such that they often need replacement on a regular basis. Does anyone have any experience of this?
Thanks
Laurie

Susp bushes don't last that long but if you have a warranty that covers wear & tear you're cushioned from those shocks. Cost about £1500 (and 2weeks off the road) to get my car through it's second MOT due to bushes needing replaced but Tesco paid for it all. Now with Warranty Direct and only had one small claim (wheel bearing).
Second in bold coz I've never had a car fail it's MOT so badly, and the car was only 4 years old, not 14!!

Carrying all these concrete slabs around doesn't help the suspension, now does it Derek
Mine's going in for 150k service and that's a whopping £725 I was a normal heterosexual chap, but in these new woke awakenings I now identify as a Wardrobe.

Hate to think what those stone slabs weighed but an emergency stop would have been interesting!!

Hadn't really thought about a third party warranty before reading this. Looked at Tesco and they have stopped doing it. Warranty Direct looks great but at £800 a year seems a bit rich.
Any others that people can recommend?
Or do i just put £50 a month aside and hope? It's smiles per gallon that count... not miles per gallon

Just had my 45K service at a cost of £345 Inc vat also had the ride height sensor softwear updated under warranty. Still got 12 months left but will defiantly look at an extended warranty when mine is up. Service was at Hatfields Liverpool on the dock road.

my d/3 is a 2008,i have factory warranty until june 2011,i believe they do the warranty and you can also add the recovery at extra cost, what did your extended warranty cost?also was it with recovery?.i found out last year my bank account also gives me full recovery including the tin tent for free,so i will drop the l/r one,to save a bit.

I have just been charged £530.00 for 1st years service on D4, when I queried it the reason was because the new engine is more expensive to service then the old 2.7??
They knocked off £60.00 as a goodwill gesture I still think this is excessive, have covered just over 8,000 miles

also, they are not all prone to eating parts. I'd done 80k miles on my old one in 3 years without anything needing changing, suspension wise, and I guess others have too. OK, if you are unlucky, as with any modern car, if something does fail it can prove costly (which is why folks have said about getting a good warrenty).
The independant LR dealers are also (IMHO) cheaper than the larger chains. I've paid around 300 quid for each service at Hereford LR.
