D3 V8 Tuning or Chipping? |
|
Anyone have any suggestions for getting more power and better fuel economy from the 4.4L V8? I've read all of the TDV6 tuning threads but cant seem to see any V8 suggestions. 2005 D3 SE 4.4

Sport exhausts and decat pipe are not possible here !

Quite possible in Oz. “There are only three sports: bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely gamesâ€

Disko3,
Power:
I have removed the big "Euro looking" muffler from under the car, added a merge pipe or H-pipe to join the two pipes up and fitted a K&N air filter. Without doubt this has made the engine more livlier and eager to go and it sounds fantastic! It now sounds like a V8, its far from noisey or obnoxious, its more along the lines of what you would expect from a AMG V8 merc. Everyone loves it, especialy when the foot is flat powering up muddy rut ridden tracks. You can keep your Dieseasel!
I have dynoed the car and there is no benefit in modifying the air box any further than fitting the K&N, i have explored further possibilitys for the exhaust and have a couple of options, 1 from Remus who do a catback system and another option from Magnaflow who also do a cat back, these are all a little pricey for mine ($1800-2200), have to come from overseas (which, is not a deal breaker) but I'm totaly content with the muffler removal.
Once i get my fingure out and remove the vehicles ECU and give it to my guy for a couple of days i will have results from the retune with dyno results.
Economy:
Whats that?
I have always owned performance cars before the D3, the car it replaced was a Ford FPV BF Typhoon (turbo6) and the D3 really uses no more fuel than that so i cant really complain, im sure if you got out of a Camry or Diesel 4WD it would seem heavy on fuel.
The mods i have already done have not impacted ecomony in either way, the retune to the factory ECU should help but as i said i have not made this happen yet.
Matt.
