Sure the question has been asked many times, but is the D4 any less expensive to run/maintain than an elderly D3?
My man-maths is hoping that I can justify a D4 on the basis that it wont cost be c£1500/year to maintain
Don't get me wrong, I know this is still a complex, multi purpose, 3 tonne vehicle, but equally surely some of the D3 'foibles' have been ironed out? I guess it should also use a bit less fuel?'06 TDV6 HSE, Java, Black Leather, Logic 7, Privacy, Steps

Mine uses less fuel and less tyres but that doesn't make up for the much greater depreciation on a newer vehicle.DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

Same(ish) here for my D4, only thing apart from servicing and tyres and that was a new battery. That’s in 7 years and 48k mikes. Making up for the D3 regularly trying to bankrupt me.
Now I’ve blown it.

noted, but I've already decided to change so depreciation will be a cost whether I stick with a LR or go to the dark side (German/Swedish)'06 TDV6 HSE, Java, Black Leather, Logic 7, Privacy, Steps

JLR and other firms offering extended warranty insurance after year 3 typically charge c£700pa. (Add in £250ish pa on top of that for servicing). And they seem to be a lot more reliable generally.
So yes, it seems to me that they are a good bit cheaper to run (better consumption, less tyre and brake wear also) but of course the oldest D4 is only 8 (?) so there's no experience of what ones older than that cost.
And any vehicle this complex (JLR or Volvo or whatever) is bound to cost more to run than a Ford Focus
I had a manual D3 so haven't benefited greatly from reduction in fuel consumption.
Sport mode certainly hits fuel consumption, but otherwise the 8 speed box is remarkably good.

I’ve got to differ, none are cheap to run but D3 components are cheaper and more abundant than D4, VED and insurance is cheaper, standard size tyres are cheaper(D3 19”; D4 20”), tyre life about the same, servicing costs are far cheaper, battery is cheaper, MPG about the same, I’ve found little improvement if any with the D4 never, ever seen 30+ that is claimed, the big decider is the size of the the D4 engine gives you, the cost, I never have the radio on I just love to listen to the gentle growl of the engine. It can when others can't,
It will when others won't,
It goes where others don't.
