My hidden winch, just to show you where it sits and what it looks like. Hope it helps!
I bought the car with it already installed. If I was going to fit one, I would have it hidden, as even if the next prospective owner doesn't want a winch, you haven't messed around with the 'standard' of the car. If you're going to use it a lot, then perhaps an exposed one would be best.
Also - get some training. They're dangerous!
Dyneema rope is great and a wireless remote removes you from where the danger is. Tree strops, and rope damper are useful accessories.

Hidden Winches should IMHO be banned
The whole point of Winching safely is observing how the cable spools on or off
Each to there own but question why you need a winch first get some proper training never play at winching its an accident waiting to happen at its safest
If you do wear one with pride

I see your point regarding being able to see the spool.
The winch I use at work every day is 'open' (ie not hidden). Even when you can see the spool, it's not always possible to get it feeding in perfectly straight and you sometimes get bunching (especially when winching over a long distance). Even with snatch blocks and other fixed points you have situations where it's simply not possible to feed the line in so it spools on 'neatly' and you then have to pay out and then feed the line back on neatly until taught and pull again.
I can see the spool on my D3 discreet winch (albeit you have to be in the right place to see it) so I don't have any safety concerns with that. I don't see that either of my winches are safer than the other as long as they are operated correctly...

One of the spooling tricks you are taught on the LR courses is use a broom handle to assist with the wire laying correctly

Still too close to the 'action area' for my liking!!!
Did they also tell you how wire rope will whip if it shears under load and has previously been known to have sliced through the rear pillars of a Defender? Seems like they are contradicting themselves! Either that or it's a great urban myth that they tell to get people to pay attention when winching! Perhaps that's how they got me to by Dyneema rope - it could all be a marketing ploy. It's a conspiracy I tell ye...

A winch bar is an improvement over those winches that just hang out the front
