D4 3.0 LTR NON STARTING - 59 PLATE

Has anyone had a problem on a D4 3.0 Ltr TDV6 where it turns over on the key but does not start. Grateful if anyone can share how the problem was solved. I have a 59 plate D4 and all the basis - fuel, triggers, key, immobiliser, fuel pumps and fuel pressure etc have been checked but the injectors do not fire and allow fuel into the cylinders.

Chris

Have you had the codes read to see what is there and how do you know the injectors are not working..

there were only 2 codes when the car broke down - p0088 and p0087 high and low fuel pressure. Once cleared, no codes have returned despite cranking many times. I have scoped the injector wires and have no voltage on them. Fuel pressure reaches permisable levels after about 15 seconds but engine will not fire.

If the fault codes are not returning try a hard reset, crank again and then try the codes. If you have a code reader with live data try looking at the parameters for fuel charging.

Clearly you are right to focus on the initial codes if these are the only ones you have. But I have also seen a duff crankshaft position sensor give the symptoms you describe on a D3 and it gave a false fuel pressure code.

My main interest though is the fact that you had both a high and a low fuel pressure. To me this suggests a problem with the Fuel Rail Pressure (FRP) sensor. This could be the sensor itself or a short in the wiring to the ECM. A problem with this sensor would stop all the injectors from working too.

Robbie, Thanks for your post I have changed the FUEL PRESSURE CONTROL VALVE on the LH fuel rail today as the though was exactly that the fuel was returned to tank before pressure could be generated. The ECU would then prevent the injectors from firing. Sadly this has made no difference. I am reluctant to change the fuel pressure sensor unless I can prove it is not working. If you unplug the fuel rail pressure sensor, it generates a fault code but when car is cranking, there is no fault code to suggest it is faulty - only that the fuel pressure rises very slowly and there is no way of externally checking fuel rail pressure other than with diagnostic computer. I use Autologic and sadly it will only confirm what the ECU sees. I wonder if the fuel pressure sensor could be scoped to get a picture of its output???!

I am about to scope both cam and crank sensors together to see if they are in alignment - this may prove faulty crank sensor/ reluctor ring or cam belt jumped a tooth( unlikely but we have to check it!!!)

This of course could bve a faulty ECU but at £500 I cannt afford to swap it out at this stage.

I'm sure you could o-scope the sensor with a t-pin and it would be good to see the signal and any noise. I seem to remember that the FRP sensor can only be removed/replaced together with the rail and comes as a complete unit.

Glad you have access to the scope as not a regular DIY tool and I cannot borrow one from work anymore. They really are excellent tools and I have been tempted to buy one of the sub-£300 Chinese 'hand-held' 2-channel scopes that are on ebay to play with.

Hopefully one of the other guys will have some suggestions too.

Thumbs Up

I would bite the bullet and let a dealership fault it then see what's wrong then decide if it's worth them doing it or yourselves...

You're probably better string a new thread to avoid confusion as it could be a completely different issue..

As above Thumbs Up
Have taken the battery out and checked the connections underneath for water ingress or corrosion?
