only way to stop it is to block the air intakes and suffocate it

Chances are most of us with extinguishers on board aren't going to be CO2, but dry powder. Will this work instead?

Dry powder will definitely damage the engine, you don't want it sucked into the air intake!
Is it really common enough to worry about?

When I was an apprentice mechanic, the boss had serviced a fiat punto (petrol) and 15mins after the customer took it away he rang with "did you put any oil in my car"
Of course, the answer was yes - he wouldn't have driven the 10 miles or so to where he was (tesco) if we hadn't.
About an hour later, the phone went again with the rest of the story:
After coming off the phone, the guy had re-checked the oil but as it was so clean he hadn't seen it so he'd gone in the shop and bought a gallon and put nearly all of it into the engine  he then made it a couple of miles to the bypass where it ran away, he was stood outside the car with the key in his hand with it revving like an f1 car on speed  the fire brigade turned up too late and the engine destroyed itself
You couldn't make it up sometimes...........

I had a runaway in my defender, managed to stall out my dropping the clutch with it in 5th. Engine was toast anyway.

Last year my new VW Amarok with 10,000 miles on the clock ran away!
Being an auto I was just leaving a roundabout and it took off speeding to over 70mph and overpowering the brakes in 2nd gear!
It finally let go with a big hole in the block. VW were a nightmare despite me telling them on at least 5 occasions that it revs on its own following a big throttle input.
It was one of the most unpleasant motoring experiences!

Early 200tdi engines were prone especially when cold . The oil drain from the head back into sump couldn't take the flow so it backed up and overflowed into the breather system & this got sucked into the engine. The faster it ran the worse it got. Initially a revised breather supplied and the 300tdi had better drains.
