As far as I am aware the D4 does not automatically check the oil level. The dash oil level display works the same way as a dipstick.... if you do not manually select it and read it it will not tell you any warning, even if critally low.
I have known one seize because of low oil level. The oil PRESSURE warning came on just before it seized, but there was no warning of low level.
This seems crazy to me, as even a twenty year old Peugeot 206 warns you of the level before starting.
Many Discovery 4's use oil. I check before changing the oil and many levels are very low on the on dash dipstick, this is borne out with the quantity sucked out, four litres in some cases instead of nearly six!
Obviously something has happened in this case, but a warning to everyone else...... check your oil!
I ask this as I used to check the oil on my D3 each week, but don't do so now as it has never used enough oil to require topping up, even immediately before my 6k mile oil changes.

Both can use oil, but the D4 tends to use a drop more than the D3.
But this is at 16000 miles, with probably no top up!
So guys... The post script to this is that my friend got roughly 25 miles out of the engine before it died, leaving him stranded on the M62 on Saturday.
Today they've been out and sorted a car to keep them mobile, but he's now looking for someone who could either supply & fit a recon engine, or do a rebuild if viable?
Do we have anyone on the forum who could take this on?2005 Discovery 3 HSE Auto

Steve I have seen this on a few 3 ltr engines as well, I did a 2010 RRS service the other day, I only got 3.9 ltrs out of it.. I think it might be the twin tubo's that suck a bit harder on the oil usage..
