The rest of the functionality remains as before with the dash remaining in daylight mode even though the sidelights are actually on. Sidelights can still be selected as normal, although all it actually does is turn on the green indicator light, dim the dash slightly and turn on all the interior backlights and mood lights (where fitted).

The only thing currently not enabled is the regular parking lights (does anyone use this?) as I appear to have run out of connectors. I've ordered the required bits so that will be sorted later this week.

Obligatory scribbled on wiring diagram, with test results, corrections and crossings out:

Nothing went bang or anything.

After living with it for a couple of days I really like this configuration. It is a lot more reassuring having the external lights as a means of knowing the vehicle is actually locked (or super-locked in my case). Plus the safety bonus of the external lights coming on automatically when people are loading and getting in on a poorly lit street.

I'll probably keep it this way and tweak it so that the parking lights work in the original way. Next will be changing the number plate lights to LEDs and then add cornering lights.

Made a couple of patch leads to provide a fused feed to the left and right lights, which also restores normal parking light function:

Installed in the CJB:

I've left the modification so that it triggers the front & rear LEDs from the unlock command, but it takes 2 minutes to change them to ignition switched or to revert to standard.

Hi Robbie,
Thanks for sharing your workaround.
I've been trying to achieve option 2 via the servicing function of SDD but using the Scandanavian or Poland DRL settings turns the led's and dipped beam on as soon as the engine is started whereas I only want the LED's.

What terminals do in need to connect the jumper cables in so that my LED's only come on when the engine is started?

I'm not at home to check the numbers but there are unused ignition switched fuse positions on the CJB, so a multimeter would be your friend.

I do commend the 'on at unlock' option to you though. It may be a bit BMW but it is very practical.

I had that on my BMW E61 angel eyes which had to go to make way for the Disco.
I think I'll go for the on at ignition but would like front only and not rear so may have to incorporate some diodes.

For that you will need to run a circuit direct to the headlights rather than jumper wires at the CJB.

Nice write up. Bow down

Always amazed at some of the things you guys come up with

If I made up a similar lead does the wire have to be on a specific side or does it not matter?

Cheers

I'm not sure I understand your question. By 'side' do you mean the separate circuits for the left and right lights?

Apologies. Want I meant was if I built a similar lead which side should i take the live feed from, or does it-not matter. In the photos it looks like the top side. Cheers.

I used the live feeds for the adaptive lights (it does not matter if they are fitted or not) which are split left and right. I just mirrored these to provide separate feeds to the left and right parking lights - red label for the left, green label on the right.

If you look closely at my pictures you can see I mark the mods purpose and the too and from fuse positions on the wires. This helps avoid errors and aids anyone who needs to work on the CJB in the future.

When I unlocked the vehicle last night on leaving a pub in Retford a D4 owner came over to ask why his lights did not come on when unlocking. He lost enthusiasm when I mentioned additional wires.

Hi Robbie. Sorry to come to this thread so late but am interested in this mod. From what I can tell you have patched the live feeds from the adaptive lights to the parking light fuses so that these would be live when the adaptive lives come on. Is it as simple as that? I am a bit confused about how you revert to 'ignition on' mode rather than 'on opening' as your earlier pictures seem to show the same mod but with different leads. What have I missed? Very Happy thanks for any help. Andy.
