I'm confused. My D3 HSE 06 model would go quite a long way on a tank full if I was kind to it, several occasions getting around 600 miles to the tankful, although it could come down a lot if I was heavy footed on shorter journeys. My D4 XS 11 plate which I have had for about 6 months now, does far less miles to the tankful, BUT when I come to fill it up I can't get much fuel in. The lieometer gives me impressive figures of MPG which vary appropriately with heavy foot or towing, and most noticeably uphill journerys are much less economical than downhill ones, one regular trip I make shows about 25mpg one way and 40mpg the other, I find the difference quite staggering. I find the D4 seems to warm up quicker than my D3 did and of course has much more grunt if required, but has it really got a smaller tank or is the fuel gauge telling porkies when it says it wants filling up?

The only real way to know the MPG/Costs is with the free MPG calculator app on your phone. My lieometer says 24.5 at the moment but the real mpg is 21.16!!
Mind you, it is the shooting season , so I've spent a lot of time across fields and my journey to my business every day although only 5 miles each way is windy lanes and up and down hill, so can't expect much more from a 2 ton car with the aerodynamics of a brick
Wouldn't have anything else though!!

You bought the car. The diesel is more efficient than the V8 if that's what you want. Now just enjoy it and forget about your silly MPG!!
Use it, play with it, have fun and enjoy life.
....very interesting as it was said that the D4 trashed the D3 on fuel consumption
- the 3 litre twin turbo engines - was more frugal & liveley
- the 8 speed gearbox - reduced the revs at higher speed cruising
- other tweaks here & there made other economies.
if whats being said is taken on face value - a D4 isnt that much differnt in MPG terms
my D3 varies
....it has delivered phonominal crusing in France a couple of winters ago (optimum speed, higher humidity, steady no stop start running)
around here is different than a 200 - 300 mile continuous journey
I aways check by brimming the tank...its never less than 25..& has reached 32 on some hard driven longer runs
I use a fuel treatment every 6 months or so (usually REDEX sometimes Millers as I get this for free)
I now take it as the reality is being written here - no major differenceBREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics
Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.
Founder: Dipsticks-R-Us Inc
D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

Real world figures here...... Not too impressive, not much different to D3, nor have they changed much since passing the 10k mark. The Lie-ometer regularly tells me 27.5mpg Check your real figures, you may have a shock!!!
