Hi,
Just though it worth a mention that I had a magazine recently handed down to me from a friend and they were comparing the D4 with the latest Merc GL. Need I say it!! the D4 came out on top. Good result

The two aren't comparable at all. The GL is like a higher S-Class. Feels and drives like a huge sedan. Certainly got a bigger punch than the D4, but the mileage makes you cry.
Not sure it can do off-road, the sump guard is plastic for instance. And I bet the rest of the gimmicks is just for show as well. But it has automatic folding 3rd rear seats. I wish LR would offer that. 2012 D4 SDV6 HSE - Heavy Duty, Alpine Roof, Sidesteps, modded LR RAI, Stebel Nautilus, Trailer hitch cargo carrier - Best Car I've ever owned
2013 Mercedes GL500 - Iridium Silver - The Missus' car <- new A/C right after purchase, new motor mounts after 40k km. No problems with the Disco whatsoever.

Really, why? Just another thing to go wrong. That said I use the third row rarely so maybe it would be useful for those using them a lot.
Auto closing and opening boot could be useful though, grant you that

Discussed in this thread earlier this month http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic100240.html ..I found the GL to be very drab for the money they were asking ...it's a big ole thing though 21 year LR veteran > D2 GS 2003 > D3 S 2006 > D3 HSE 2009 > D4 HSE 2013 > D4 HSE 2015 > D5 HSE 2018 > DS HSE R-Dynamic P300e 2021

We have a guy that comes along to the Kielder Safari and he has a GL320 CDI and I have to say it is more capable off road than I thought it was going to be (not a patch on the D4 though ) They are very well equipped and feckin huge One problem they seem to have off road is when you raise the air suspension to its highest they become rather bouncy Cheers Ian

It's a fricking huge car. It looks so much bigger than the D4, especially in off-road mode. But despite the size, the disco's 3rd row offers much more space than the GL. 2012 D4 SDV6 HSE - Heavy Duty, Alpine Roof, Sidesteps, modded LR RAI, Stebel Nautilus, Trailer hitch cargo carrier - Best Car I've ever owned

Personally, I would not buy a GL with my own money however, there are exceptional lease deals on GL's as Merc are not selling enough and therefore, they are discounting them out to leasing companies. My neighbour has just taken delivery of his new GL. List price was over 60K and he is paying 510per month on a 2 year/15k mile lease. From memory, the deposit was 3 advance payments.
I buy with my own money and on the basis of highest residual value alone, the Discovery wins hands down. Current:
2014 RRS 3.0 HSE
Porsche 997 GT3
BMW 118d SE
Past:
D4 HSE 3.0 TDV6 Auto
D3 HSE 2.7 TDV6 Auto
