D4 new car underbody rust

Hi all from Taiwan,

Just received my new D4 built Feb12. It has been a lovely vehicle so far and I have had nothing but praises and fingers crossed that it is going to stay like that too. I noticed numerous rust and oxidation on the underbody, namely the drive shaft is rusted very badly, and numerous surface oxidation/rust spot is evident on the bolts and suspension arms. Is this NORMAL or is it something I should attend to?

Thanks and look forward to exchange some enjoyment from owning this vehicle.

Hi welcome

Corrosion protection is limited to fulfilling the warrenty requirement and no more.

D3's also get surface rust on parts but it is rarely detrimental to function.

If you hate it waxoil it.

maybe with all the typhoons down there the salt water may not help either
It is better to have and not need it then need and not have it.

Bugs me too

.......I had Volvos for many years that were undersealed to death...you dont see any rust on critical or structural parts.
Also you dont see that water & salt get under the thick layer of protection & this what causes the rot to set in

My 760 lost the floor below the drivers feet (You could have done a fred Flinstone & pushed or stopped the car the hole was that big) sad as it was only13 & a half years old.

I am doing all the bits of rust you can see beneth my Disco with a wire brush, applying Kurust (that converts the rust to a blue state) Galvafroiding all I work on then using hammerite unsderseal that has Waxoyl in it....a thin continuous coat.

Then Waxoyling the rest...

....I too feel distressed that rust appears - I have none on the body of my 6 year old car only the chassis
but for the cost of the vehicle it shouldnt do this
 BREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics
Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.

D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.

... that has changed: Todays Volvos also show rust at short time on non critical parts. Wink

I am pretty sure they have been offloaded to Geely for a few years now. Car division that is.

Rust on drive shafts is normal...doesn't hurt them one bit. As long the frame isn't rusting, you're good.

Thanks for this re-assuring comment CMG. This is still quite on the back of my mind as I have seen a few examples already that has way less rust on the drive shaft and general surface of the control arms than mine. Makes me think if the rust extend into the CV boot.

I worked at Landrover and parts often had surface rust before they were fitted ! No need to worry.

LOL, don't want to be a whinging baby but not too sure if I should be glad it is the norm at Land Rover or worry about something that may develop down the line.. oh well there's warranty at least for the next 3 years. Hope I won't be needing it too often.
