Having spent last week driving a D4 it will take one hell of a Defender to beat it. If it's on the same chassis & running gear then why not have the comfier vehicle with 7 seats and huge load space?
The D4 interior when seen in black and not alpaca (as in all the pic's) is not so daunting, in fact after a few days becomes the norm and I was ready to drill holes in it. It all clips off as the D3 so easily changed if messed up. It's a textured soft plastic type material so mud easily wiped off. Also loved all the gadgets, camera's, keyless ignition etc which I doubt the Defender will have. Will the Defender have the 2.7 or 3.0 engine? If it's the 2.7 then no discussion.
Getting back into mine to drive the 400 miles home it seemed very basic and noisy. It's scary how quickly the D4 became the accepted norm to me... It was also noticably quicker than my mapped D3
So D4 for me! (I'm only £40k short...).Off Roading is OK.... But I'd rather be Boating!
And there's the decision maker for many, myself included.
A high-spec Defender 3 on the T5 Chassis with coils and a modest engine (I suspect we'll not see a TDV6 in it, more likely something sourced from Iveco at a guess?) will allow more than enough change to put all your offroad kit on it and still leave some behind for a secondhand A6 in the driveway for "comfy" days.I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

D4 for me, I want the comfort and toys of the FFRR without clients getting sniffy that you have a RR.DS3 TDV6 HSE - Silver with Alpaca (old one) Gone

I'm as yet undecided, I've only seen pics of the D4 & the new new Defender is still speculation. When I see them "in the flesh", I suspect I'll want them both.
Slightly O/T but I wonder if the D4 HSE will steal FFRR sales as the D3 HSE did in 2005/06? I suspect that it will.

Any links to articles on the new new Defender spec or is it just a rumour at this point?
D4 is beautiful but abit too glam for ruts, mud and bramble rash A happy childhood ... is the worst possible preparation for life.

Ken,
I'm sure you'll be the first with a mapped D4 for us all to try!! I would imagine it would give the TDV8 a run for it's money, if not quicker?Off Roading is OK.... But I'd rather be Boating!
I might squeeze in a late D3 between now and getting the Defender though The surest sign that intelligent life exists elsewhere in the universe is that none of it has tried to contact us yet.

is there anything out there that anyone has seen/heard in relation to the new new Defender? Steve N | 21MY Defender | 08MY Discovery 3 (history) | 06MY Discovery 3 (ancient history)
FFRR is being replaced with the DCRRWACOT (DoubleCreamRangeRover With a Cherry On Top) towards the end of 2010 and that will be a whole new kettle of lobsters. Much more luxurious, think Bentley meets a Range Rover. So yes, they will see FFRR sales fall to D4 as they had to take the D4 HSE upmarket to avoid losing sales from those who won't want to spend the additional £20k over and above current FFRR prices to get into the new one.
Or something like that anyway.I know it's not considered "kind" to say no these days, but no. Just no, ok? And if it's not ok, still no.

I wonder if Martin is now going to register that domain name just in case I believe that every human has a finite number of heart-beats. I don't intend to waste any of mine running around doing exercises.

New Defender for me, if and it's a big if, they get the right balance between world class off-road ability, utility workhorse and reasonable comfort/quality.
My latest Puma 110 is far better than the first one I tried but still not good enough for motorway trips, I totally agree with the comments about the D4. It looks smart, interior is very plush but that's not what I want from a Land Rover.
Just hope the rumoured Defender actually appears and does what its buyers need it to. Reckon a decent double cab pick-up version must be on the cards as this is a big seller in the utility type marketplace for Toyota, Mitsubishi etc.2020 BMW X1 18d XDrive X-Line Auto
