D4 ordered - private sale or trade in D3?
So, taken the plunge and ordered a D4 XS (Ipanema, almond, arabica). All very exciting. Just waiting for a delivery date.
My question is about whether to try a private sale, or just take the hit and let the stealer have it? The bore is that the service and MOT are due at end May, so keen not to pay for that if the dealers taking the car, but would assume I'd be better to do that if selling privately. Just a question of whether it's worth that expense for the extra money.
If anyone here has a view on what current values are, I'd be grateful. We Buy Any Car comes in at a shade over 16K; the other website is slightly higher at 16.5k.
Here's a summary of the car (only interior photos at the mo):
Discovery 3 XS 07/07
47K miles
Auto
Tonga Green metallic
Custom leather (see photo)
HK high line stereo, 6 cd, etc
Heated seats
Full LR service history except one by TFC
Full size spare and wheel protector
Rear light guards
Rub strips
Tow pack and electrics
Full set rubber mats
Tinted glass
Standard 18" alloys
Full set of LR seat covers in sand (unless they fit the D4??)
Warranty direct top level cover (whatever it's called that I pay for monthly that I assume can be transferred).
In terms of condition:
Outside is immaculate
Interior: custom leather, 2 years old; alpaca beige with dark piping. Fold down seats never used; rear seats always covered by LR seat covers; front seats great (new seat pads fitted at the same time as the seat covers)
New Grabber UHPs 9K miles ago (12 months) tons of tread left.
Car has had quite a lot of maint work done:
- New EGR valves at 35K miles
- New ARB bushes at 46K miles (included 4 wheel alignment)
- New lower control arms at about 37K
- New alternator (500 miles ago!)
- Brake fluid and coolant changed last service
- Brake pads all around 12K miles ago

I agree with Dave - having done both, dealer wins hands down
No hassle
No time wasters
No inviting potential thiefs to see your car
No worry with respect to money transfers ect
No worry about not being without car if sold before new one delivered
No hassle with transfering private plate (if you have one)
vs.
More £'s
Pay your money, takes your choice
Nice seats by the way

Thanks. Hadn't thought about the scumbag thieving git issue. Good point.
I've been really happy with the seats. It's seat surgeon's who made them, but fitted by a top chap in Ipswich that others here have used. Excellent quality and far better leather than OEM in my view. Would highly recommend them to anyone.PAGODA

Try selling on here and if it doesn't find a new home by the time your d4 comes let the dealer take it leave auto trader and eBay alone just full of time wasters and scammers
Do you mind letting on how much seat surgeons charged I like the look of that very much and did they just do seats or door cards aswell handy for me in york
Agreed , with all , dealer ,they take the strain so to speak , 2008 ,hse, it does what it says .

I recently had a similar dilema when I bought my 07 XS from Hunters Land Rover. The dealer offerd me £1300 less than a webuyanycar quote for my BMW 5 series. They do have BMW dealers in thier group but my car was just a little too old so would be sent to auction.
I took the BMW straight to webuyanycar and they only knocked £200 off the quoted price (alloy wheel dings) and bought it there and then, no hassle, 20 minutes.
I got the impression that if the dealer network could re-cycle the car they would have offered more, so it may hinge on thier willingness to sell the car or auction it. Clearly they will do much more for you if buying a new car so I would expect a good deal from them.
Don't dismis the webuyanycar option as I offloaded an audi A6 to them 2 years ago and again got £1000 more than the trade in offerd by a dealer.

But surely you must have been given a price to px from the dealer and one to just buy the XS without px ............ no ?
It's which ever stacks up best for you when you consider similar vehicles to yours for sale in Autotrader etc etc ?

Thanks for the advice. I'll probably try to sell here but keep the option open for part ex.
Peely - yes, I've got a price from the stealer, but it was the same as We Will Buy Your Car, so they've said they'll think again and come back to me, hopefully with an improved offer.
Having had a look on Autotrader, cars with my spec, mileage and condition seem to range from £19K, to the most expensive, which is £22K. Even with room to haggle, I would hope the stealer to come back with something better than £16.5K. But time will tell!

An 8% discount is available at some dealers, so if yours is worth £16k in the trade they should be offering at least £19-20k for yours with no discount on the new one ?
Shop around if they don't play ball !

A couple of years ago I wanted to sell my wifes excellent freelander 2 gs.
DEALER OFFERED £13750
WE BUY ANY CAR OFFERED £15500
I reckoned it was worth no more that £16000 on Autotrader
So decided to accept the £15500 for all the reasons mentioned in earlier posts. Went ahead and purchased replacement car and drove to WE BUY ANY CAR office only to be met by a company representative who immediately downvalued our car (whilst admiring its condition). Furious I left and advertised in Autotrader that day for £15650. Sold (for asking price) within two hours to a man from Southampton. Could have sold it ten times offer that week !!!Discovery 3 HSE 55 plate Buckingham Blue with Alpacha
Discovery 300 TDI auto, one of the last, now gone
Freelander 2 gs manual, from new, now gone
Defender td5 full county pack, from new lovely lovely, now gone
Defender 110 12 seater 300tdi no heater, good prep for antarctic, now gone
various old farm landies, what a way to learn to drive !!!

I would swap seats with me for a few £ and then trade in with my cream leather as dealers wont add any real value for that
nor would WBAC

Dealers only offer auction prices, if you think the deal is good, you are surely not up to date with car values. As a rule of thump, if we buy any car are offering you £x, add £3k onto it for true private sale value.
Put it on eBay, auto trader and on here for two grand more than your best offer and I'm sure it will sell quickly, particularly this time of year. Don't service it or spend a penny. You can knock a further £250 off as a gesture to cover these things.
If you do anything else, you must have money to burn, and should go back to the dealer and accept their pittance.
I have had 4 cars this year, 9 last year and 8 the previous year. All private sells, some private buys, no hassle, and saved a fortune over the years by not trading in to dealers who offer you a price that the trade will take it off their hands for so they don't get stuck ( lowest price, based around a large markup for retail)....................................................................................................
If my wife ever sells my stuff for what she thinks I paid for them, you lot are gonna get some bargains!
