D4 Paddle Gear Shift V2 a software free Wireless mod

Hi part 1, ill update this post with part 2 tomorrow.
For info i dont see why this mod cant be done in a simlar way on the D3, but can we please keep this thread totally D4 related.
If you want to start a D3 thread with the same mod in please feel free and ill input to it, but keep this one D4 only and clean, Thanks

As you all know ive fitted Paddle shift to my D4 but to do this its needs software changes for its activation, This is fine for me because i have the means to do it if needed but its not so good for a few members who want the paddles but dont have the means to the needed software changes or arnt local eniough to drive to somewhere who can do it for them or are possibily not in the UK.

I was asked by quite a few members to try and come up with a paddle shift modification WITHOUT the need for software changes or hacks as some call it . Mr. Green

So here is how ive managed it after a few failed attempts with other ideas....
I used the 2010 LR RRS steering wheel and LR paddles to match.

You could use the standard D4 wheel and add a couple of momentary switches mounted in the rear plastics of the wheel if you wished to instead of a new RRS wheel and dedicated paddles.

First i need one of these, i ordered a 3 button version because i have a plan for the 3rd unused button later.
http://www.quasaruk.co.uk/acatalog/12vsystems.html

I then started a simple modification to the paddle switches isolating them from the cars electronics while maintaining the LED function for when its dark. to do this we need to strip the paddle of the switch to make a simple modification and to add 2 extra wires.

Repeat the same for both paddles

The paddle is held on to the main switch with a knurled brass pin, Cut the plastic that is holding the knurl to release the pin.

Then slide the pin out.

With the pin removed the paddle can now be removed from the main switch, we dont need the knurled grabber in the plastic because the pin wont fall out when we refit it.

Remove the paddle and turn over the switch to see the minature PCB and its components.

Now we have to remove 2x SMT Resistors as part of seperateing the micro switch from the rest of the cars electronics, i un solderd them but they will just flick of with a screw driver if you wish lol Very Happy

The next stage is to seperate the other side of the micro switch from the cars electrical system, you can do this by lifting a leg on the micro switch with the soldering iron.

Now we have isolated the paddle switch contacts from the car we need to add 2 wires to each that will connect to our remote control wireless key fob.
Solder 2 wires to the pins shown in the picture about 6" long for the left paddle and about 12" long for the right paddle.

Once you have the wires on both paddles you can refit them to the wheel and routing the wires to the left of the wheel.

I need to now strip the PCB out of the remote that came with the kit for modification and attachement to the wheel.

I need to attach the newley addes paddle wires to the remote transmitter but first i decided removed the factory micro switches and use the solder pads for my wire connections.
I could have used the pads below the switches but i choose to remove them and solder direct.

Next i attached my paddle wires to the remote PCB.

A bit of heat srink on the battery to stop it coming loose or shorting inside the wheel.

Back together with the steering wheel switches locating the remote PCB to the left behind the left switch pack.

A couple of blobs of glue and we now have a wireless paddle shift steering wheel.

That is the hardest part of the whole mod over with , ill post part 2 , the receiver and TCM connections tomorrow Smile

Pete

I did notice it, I'll be making that voice activated warm steering wheel phone call in the morning.

I figured it out too, although I have to admit I didn't understand what the point was until after my 2nd glass of wine last night...

Quite ingenious really Thumbs Up sort of like a wireless clock spring connected to anything you want...in this case, the +/- change switches of the gear selector lever Thumbs Up

The title of the thread tells you that much!

Damn - I was hoping nobody would spot that Rolling Eyes Rolling with laughter

Actually, the title of the thread only covers what is documented and alluded to in the first post. It contains nothing about the rest of the modification to actually get the gear change to work....

Anyway, haven't you got any other fake spaniards to be picking on? Wink Laughing

Part 1 is the exciting bit - the rest is pretty mundane.......(I know what's involved!)

The fake Spaniard claims to have gone away for a week, so the next best thing is a real Spaniard. No doubt the fake one will have a far better solution than Pete's ingenious approach....... Whistle Wink

Not much more to tell you today really, ive been on with some other stuff and not had much time to finish or prepare the info needed.

I have to make a neet diagram of the recever and the mods i made to it because its not just a simple power up with 2 wires out for the gearbox + and - although it can work like that if needed.

For me there are some gear protection security functions to finalise to stop you jumping 2 gears at a time and to make sure you have to let go of the paddle before the next gear change/ paddle press is possibile etc etc.

Ill update with more info as i get time.

Pete

I was wondering about switch and relay contact bounce. Replacing relays with mosfets amongst other improvements perhaps? Good that such issues have been addressed.
