D4 Rotten Exhausts, & worn carpet.

I had a look over a 49K mile 65 plate D4 HSE Lux earlier today, it's not quite what I'm looking for, but is at a local used car dealer and I was next door for something else.

It looked great in Dark Grey, and was in really good condition underneath, bodywork wise, and inside, apart from two things.

About 6" back from the left foot rest in the drivers footwell the carpet was completely worn through, a hole about 1.5" in diameter, and even the foam underneath was worn away.
Obviously the previous owner liked to sit with his heal there, but why on earth would anyone let it get that bad once you'd seen it start to happen, it's beyond me.

Plus both rear silencers were corroded and perforated at their lowest point. One had a couple of Pea sized holes, and some smaller ones, the other had a smaller hole.
They were both blowing with the engine running.
It looked like moisture had collected inside and rotted it's way out.

Is that a common fault on a D4?

I have noticed a small hole in each of the rear silencers on our 2016 Landmark, but they look to be standard rather than corrosion, as they’re uniform in shape, and don’t have corrosion around them. I don’t remember them on our previous MY2010 HSE. Perhaps someone might confirm their presence should be there. I wonder whether they’re drain holes if there has been an issue with corrosion?

Previous owner was probably Long John Silver Shocked or a fisherman who uses it on the beach and has got a wooden leg Whistle
I have seen some Discovery’s that have been treated dreadful for what they cost, usually when they are leased. Twisted Evil

When I chopped my MY10 D4 in it had 110k on the clock.
Exhaust had little, if any corrosion on it - certainly no holes and the carpet was absolutely fine.
That one does not sound right.
Now Golf GTI PP, 7 speed DSG.
Ex D3 and D4

Our MY2011 XS is low mileage but has no rot on the exhausts or elsewhere and no holes in the carpets -- I would question the mileage as it sounds as though they have knocked 100 K off!

Most sensible are going to run floor mats so will not get the holey problem, but if you don not own the car I guess some will not bother.

Maybe the small exhaust drain holes are peculiar to the Euro6 models?

Just had a peek under my 2016MY D4 and there are indeed small pea sized holes (assuming for drainage) at the lowest point in the rear boxes. Only minor surface rust at the weld joints with 14k miles on the odo.

Thanks Guys.

For the record, although it had other issues, my 232K miles D3 had no abuse issues with the carpet.
The Exhaust silencers being a different shape didn't have holes.

As mentioned one of the silencers I saw earlier had Two pea sized holes and some smaller ones.
Both had a small amount of gas coming from the holes when the engine was running, and both had considerable build up of soot around the holes.

It’s more the state of the carpet that would concern me,what condition are the pedal rubbers and steering wheel

It all looked great inside except that one area of carpet.

The pedal rubbers, the drivers seat bolster, and steering wheel all looked like a 49K mile car.

It was as if the driver had been grinding the heel of a pair of boots into the carpet all the time.

As mentioned it's not what I'm looking for, so I won't be going back to see it again, but it amazed me how such an expensive car could be treated like that.

Nasher.

Funnily enough my D4 TDV6, which was an Italian import, had holes in its carpet on the passenger side. The best “we” could figure out was that some lady had indeed had spiky heels and sat in it often. There weren’t any on driver’s side. Whistle Whistle

You joke but that’s the answer.

My car was previously owned by a professional well known (in some circles) gambler. His partner was a pro model and the car was hers. Apart from removing a ton of blond hair from the carpet, and the odd piece of makeup paraphernalia, there was a hole from her heal. She never went anywhere without being dressed to model.
