D4 Shark Fin Antenna

Hi,
This may sound a stupid question but is it possible to take off just the outer casing on a D4 shark fin antenna?

The reason for asking is that I currently have a black housing and want to either take it off and change it for a white universal one or get the existing one sprayed.

Also would a universal one fit?
