I think the FFRR is a great vehicle. I drove both when I was buying.
However, I chose to go with a D4 and bought a BMW Z4 for the summer for the same cost as a FFRR. I liked the FFRR but the Disco with the 7 seats and larger boot made more sense and it allowed me to get the two seater roadster for summer fun. The FFRR was better than the Disco on the tech side in some areas but was very much the same in most. The cost difference was too great for those little extras and the difference was put to something that was very different.
I would be happy with either but it depends on whether you feel an extra 30k is worth it for the bit extra you get.

On the price front with the new one costing even more i have to say i would never buy new. the loss in the first year is just far too much  On the used front after 2years the prices are not that far off and at the age i looked at, 5-6yrs the FFRR is often cheaper for the same milage
We are all different horses for different courses though
Im still perturbed by how slow the pick up in this latest sdv6 is. it takes an age to set off and pickup and ive got into the habit now at junctions of two footing so the car is ready to go when i want it to FFRR Owner, very nearly became a D3 owner
Test piloted a new D4 XS SDV6.. Gone and being forgotten i hope!!

Your profile says you are a FFRR driver and not a D4 driver, so with regards to your comment above what vehicle are you comenting on. How old was the D4 you drove, how long did you drive it for, was the gearbox usedd to your driving style.
I have a MY12 D4 and have no real issues with the pick up to be honest if you floor it it will go like a scalded cat MY17 D5 1st Edition Namib Orange

My 45,000 mile MY10 D4 has no pickup issues! And the MY12 I drove (getting one, on order for decemeber) felt even quicker

I've had 3 D4's so far, 2 XS and 1 HSE.
The HSE was a MY10 with the 6 speed box. A very very good car on the road, but didn't seem to like to play in the brown stuff much.
an MY11 XS SDV6 which was slow on the pickup and the 6 speed box again and good on road but brown stuff not so good.
and now an MY12 XS with the SDV6 brute and 8speed box.
It gets moving ONCE its picked up very swiftly, it feels a bit quicker than the older ones to me.
All have had less than 2k miles on when i got them.
the HSE went back with about 15-16k on it so i think i did a fair amount of testing in just over 14weeks...
The XS had about 2k put on it and the new one has already had a k put on it.
They do/did seem to fair better turning the DSC off and leaving them in Grass/Snow TR mode. I think that sometimes slowing the throttle response would allow them to bog down more than you would expect with the weight being factored in and i dont think std fit wranglers are a bad choice really.
the infotainment speed still bugs the hell out of me.
I just cant get how a 7yr old ff can be better(to me!) in this respect and the engine pickup, than a new D4 that costs 4times+ as much! Its the first one i have without a reversing camera as well. on a 44k car i find that most perturbing that such a nicety can be left off, though the parking sensors visual side does help a lot.
And to say it doesnt have the acoustic glass it is very quiet at speed. i dont often go above 60-70 most of the time so im highly impressed by the 50mpg+ ive seen on a few runs slipstreaming lorries last average on a run was 43.6mpg with a set of 4 rims in the back for an FF about town its the same as the ff though  FFRR Owner, very nearly became a D3 owner

I struggle to imagine that imagine that a 3.0 Td6 with way less than 200hp and weighing 2.7 tons can have "better" pickup than a 3.0 TDV6/SDV6... But again that's your own opinion so fair enough.
And there's plenty of evidence here of D4s like the brown stuff!!

I dont mean in speed, the TD6 and  GM have that well and truly screwed. The SDV6 and 8Speed ZF once it picks up is a great wee monster and economical too when on a run.
I just mean the initial put your foot down at a junction bit...
I may try it in sport mode on the way home and see if it helps. FFRR Owner, very nearly became a D3 owner

Well time to try some BioD and see if it helps like it normally does as the super stuff had no affect( as its a rental if never gets more than 20litres put in!) and no diff between asda and shell diesel either...
May knock the MPG down a bit though but does depend on how much it adjust timing and duty cycles FFRR Owner, very nearly became a D3 owner

The power and new 8 speed gearbox is unquestionably a move forward for LR, there is and never has been a lack of power.
The problem is (I believe) a software problem which comes from LR trying maybe a little too hard to recover the emmission problem and mpg issue. the box is always 2-3 gear ratios higher than it should be for any given road speed, hence where the problem 'take up in drive' comes from, ie it has to down change 2 or 3 gears before any serious drive is felt, and then it unleashes like hell sending everything in the car rearwards inc passengers !!
Even this though still doesn't explain the same problem from standstill, juction exits, roundabouts etc etc in fact anywhere where the car has to move off from below 5mph !
The only real way of combatting the problem is to use it like a manual with the paddles, and make sure it has the correct gear for given road speed, but not what I really wanted when I purchased it as an auto.
Ps. LR are aware of the problem, hence why there have been 2 software updates for the new 2012 8 speed, but LR customer services unfortunately don't want to know !
