D4's Stolen
There has been a spaet of D4's having been stolen around these parts according to reports in the local paper. Owners say thier vehicles were locked and and security set. So it seems that the thieves have a way of getting into and stealing vehicles obviously bypassing the security sysyems etc. Now I have been told that this was possible previously but I thought that the later systems it was difficult or near impossible to access the vehicle security system,obviously not.Thinking I might resort to an old fashioned steering wheel clamp like we used on the 1980's or does anybody else have a better idea ?

Got a Disklock fitted to my D3 best aftermarket deterrent you can buy makes them go elsewhere for a far easier target. Ok if they wanted it that bad the would just put it onto a truck I have always wondered if someone saw a motor being loaded onto a truck in a car park by 2 blokes one in decent clothes the other in overalls would they question what was going on. Imagine alarm going but as you approach one says to other "I'm sick of this heap and if the dealer don't sort it they will meet the devil in me" how many would just keep on walking.

+1 on Disklok (size Medium with the cotton steering wheel cover as they are vicious to put on and take off)... Just makes it harder to steal and more chance of being rumbled...
Oh, CCTV on the driveway too so at least I can see it's final journey commence......

Heard of a few Range Rovers going missing like this. Fords and some other makes are affected too. Anything with keyless entry and start. Apparently the key signal can be boosted to open and start the car even if the key inside the house etc.....
Cobra upgrade alarm with ADR Cards is a effective solution, even a cloned key will not start the vehicle without the ADR Card present.
Or chain the chassis to several Hilti bolts in the drive........

Not sure if it's possible to 'boost' or 'capture' - signal from a keyless entry system, however when I bought mine I was told by the dealer to treat the key like my wallet. Don't hand it over and leave it with anyone (i.e. Car wash etc). This is when they can be copied.
Be interesting to know if there is a common factor , like this, linking the D4s that have gone missing.

I think its awesome : my old D3 drives like new, is worth next to nothing and wont even get stolen...

Think the likely hood is that the signal is being blocked, you think you've locked it, someone with a jammer nearby, you think you've pressed the button on the fob and locked it, someone opens the door, plugs in to the OBD Port and it's gone.
After seeing other posts on here regarding the locking, we never ever use the fob to lock it, relying on the keyless button on the door handle to lock it, that only works if your within a few inches, making sure that we listen for the doors locks operating and mirrors folding, compared to the fob which will work from twenty five yards or more.

If you are only allowed to program three keys to it, surly it would be easier to buy a third key, program it, how would they take it then without trailer.L633 Defender

Not sure on the D3/4 but at work its 3 keys max and if you start programming you need all keys to be within reach to programme them so if you only have one new copied key thats all you can programme and once its programmed in the other keys will no longer work!
Ive said a few times on here why not visit a scrapyard cut off any old obd socket from any old car with a couple of feet of cable fit it in place of the original disco one and tuck the original one out of the way, they plug in its doesnt work they walk away.

its possible and doesn’t require you to blip the key for them to record the frequency they stole this car with a laptop in seconds. it doesnt take long for a genius to work it out nowadays there will always be advances in techIf it moves and it shouldn't duct tape it, if it doesn't move and it should walk away and get a big hammer

Keyless entry can now be switched off & on with a few presses of the dibber buttons. Well on some D4s, doesn't do it on mine.

Also, keep your keys in a metal box when in the house. I bought a metal key cabinet and we have just got into the habit of hanging our keys up in there (my wife has an Evoque so faces a similar issue with boosted key signals).
I tested whether this would actually prevent the key signal being picked up from outside the house by putting the key in the box, sitting in the car and trying to start it, the dash displayed 'smart key not found'.2012 - 8 Speed D4 HSE in Indus Silver with surround cameras, adaptive headlamps, privacy glass, rear entertainment, 20" alloys.

Did you have key box near car or in the house?
It needs to be near car to see if it works, scrouts use boosters to steal them.L633 Defender

With respect Darbs your 'test' hasn't proved that your set up is safe - you would need to take your metal cabinet to the car to make sure it is screening the key signal out. It may just be the key, when it is in the cabinet in the house, is just out of range of the car.
If you look at the video above the whole point is that the thieves are using a booster relay to get the signal to the car..
