I had a 205 1.9GTI and always wondered why anyone bought the 309? The 205 was an amazing car and I still fondly remember some of the trips I had in it. New Defender L663 110 SE (known as Noddy!)
Sold Volvo XC90 R-Design (known as Basil)
Sold - D4 HSE (Known as Gerty)
No longer the Old Buses original owner
231,000 miles and counting
05 S manual owned from March 2005
D4 Face lifted
Still original injectors and turbo
V8 Front brakes
BAS Remap, Allisport Intercooler and deCat
EGRs blanked
T-Max split charge
Hanibal Expeedition rack
Prospeed ladder
Duratrac tyres
IID BT
BAS FBH control

The 309GTi had the same 1.9 litre lump as the 205 and basically the same underpinnings but a slightly longer wheelbase seemingly made the handling a bit more forgiving. Which meant 309s rarely went through hedges backwards. I had some great drives in mine. Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

The 309 (is almost) a thing of beauty compared to the D5!
I noticed Andrew English in the Telegraph review of the D5 mentioned the Ssangyong Rodius, much to my amusement.Andy

I had a look at a D5 t'other day at a house I was visiting. I have to say that it is growing on me. I certainly wouldn't describe it as ugly, that's for sure. I admit that I wasn't keen on it when I had a look at the one at Les Comes, but that was likely a pre-production model.
Perhaps familiarity breeds acceptance. The D4 is already starting to look a bit dated when I see them on the road, rather like my old RRS. Progress, I guess.Visiting from rrsport.co.uk

Whilst I still consider the outside of the D5 to be ugly, much as I hate to admit it, I do agree the D4 (especially the early ones like mine) are now starting to look dated Andy

How much better than the D3/4 is the load area in the D5?
I could only fit 4 20" rims and tyres across the D4 boot the other day

....Perhaps familiarity breeds acceptance. The D4 is already starting to look a bit dated when I see them on the road, rather like my old RRS. Progress, I guess.
Ive been out of circulation (ill) for a number of days...but when I saw the thread title I guessed Martin had moved D3/4 -v- D5 discussion into one area as we are not allowe (by his insistence) to write anything derogatory in the D5 area...fair enough.
Reading further posts & pages in the theme its other makes of vehicles...105's (brilliant car in that era) + others...
But don't despair - because there is a "new" LR model on sale that uses the same Disco name....doesn't instantly de-value or in any way alter what Disco 3's & 4's were & still are "about"....function.
Disco 3's & 4's aren't altered or diminished in any way....on the contrary they are exemplified. As there is a comparison vehicle.
I have sat & wondered where thiss set of forums was going...whether there would be a separate section for the Disco Sport or would it be an extension of the Freelander one.
The Disco 3 / 4 forums are "joined at the hip" as the Disco 4 is largely based on the Disco 3 albeit with a sightly larger engine, more speeds transmission & a cosmetic upgrade (as one would expect 5 years into what has been an over 10 year model life). The SUV function/s remain broadly the same.
The separate Disco 5 forum is there & hasn't (as yet) "blossomed out" into what the D3/4 forum has over the years its actually been there...I like others have had a "peep" in the D5 forum to see if those registered, who have a vehicle have been forthright enough to say similar things to whats been said on the Disco 3/4 forum. I mean in frank, realistic & objective terms.
I just wonder in the years to come the D3/4's site "morphs" into more the support function (as it is right now - but more so) on what will become classic vehicles that accrue value (like E-Types have done)....only time will tell.
I predict that independents will take on major refurbs of Disco 3's & 4"s......it has happened with other marques (Citroen DS, SM as good examples)...only time will tell.BREXIT - done properly.
Right now ...We need Government - not Politics
Save the Dipstick Flagbearer-keep it simple, less likely to fail campaign-agenda items:Starting Handles, Acetylene Lamps.
Founder: Dipsticks-R-Us Inc
D3 HSE-perfectly formed, passenger friendly...has real DIPSTICK
Jag XK-but sadly no DIPSTICK...HUGE design fault
FL2 has DIPSTICK..."real comfort in rear seats"
VW Golf wondermobile (?)..has real DIPSTICK
Morris Minor..original DIPSTICK technology..and a real KEY.
