Well contacted the dealer, still waiting for a reply. Checked the service menu and it says oil service required in 1700 miles, making its first service interval 5000 miles or thereabouts Shocked. IF, this is oil dilution, then Iโ€™ve no option but to get rid, as apparently itโ€™s a persistent problem, and saddens me to say its replacement wonโ€™t be an LR.

The reality is that they don't have a clue how to fix this at the moment, unfortunately.

The only positive I can offer you is that the oil dilution percentage is based on an algorithm that seems to grossly overestimate the oil dilution percentage. The engine does not do any kind of monitoring of the oil condition; it is all algorithm-based and - at best - a guess.

The service indicator message is programmed to appear once calculated oil dilution reaches 6.1% (as stated in JLRP00100). In reality, I suspect your oil dilution percentage will be far lower than that. If you want to be certain, I suggest you take a sample of your engine oil and send it off to Millers Oils for analysis. See:

http://www.millersoils.co.uk/services/oil-analysis

I had this done against the oil in my own car and it showed oil dilution of 2.6% and high levels of iron (314ppm) in the oil after 17k miles. My daily commute is approximate 40 miles each way on a combination of motorway, A roads and B roads.

You could argue that any amount of engine oil dilution is problematic, and likely to cause premature engine wear. It doesn't require a chemistry degree to recognise that engine oil contaminated with diesel is not highly desirable. DERVs have dumped fuel into the sump for years, but probably not on this scale.

There's a bloke over on the Discovery Sport site who has estimated that at the current levels of wear, the 2.0l Ingenium will have lost 2 thou of the cylinder bore by the time it's reached 120,000 miles. Some engineers would perform a re-bore at 2 thou bore loss.

So far, Land Rover have refused to provide any indication of the service limits of this engine.

Looks like the D5 will be an even greater sales aid for Volvo.

This seems to be LRs approach to issues they have with their cars and dealer networks:

Why is it that this problem only affects MY16 onwards engines ?

Is it the AdBlue that's doing it ?

My 16MY D4 was fine Thumbs Up

LR has tampered with things, sorry tweaked things, to make the Disco cleaner, the D5 goes through a lot more AdBlue than my D4.

Update - The app now no longer says I need an service, and the service menu now says 4000 miles until itโ€™s service. Which makes its service interval 7000 miles, still short of the 16k Confused

So Iโ€™m more satisfied that itโ€™s software or sensor problem than oil dilution, but I will keep my eye on it.

Mine was updated the 11th September.

That caused mine to drop from 4000 to 1250 and the car had not moved!
