D5 rear (2nd row) seats - design fault?

For us the issue is not whether the rear seat passengers are rotund but their height. Everyone in our household is well over 6ft except SWMBO. So on a long journey there is at least one 6 footer in the back and I often sit in the back when we swap drivers (can't see her driving so less stressful! Shocked ). Having all tried the seats they are not comfortable if you are tall and have long legs. This is one reason why the D3/4 is almost perfect for us.

That may not affect short people however. Laughing

The RRS has far better rear seats, although these are buckets so not ideal if you have 5 people. We rarely do, but have 4 quite often.

This mentions "tall people capacity" amongst other things.

But probably these professional car reviewers are making stuff up to annoy this forum?

Indeed, but fitting people in is one thing, sitting there for 1-2 hours at a stretch is something else. Having not tried it for that long up the A1 I can't know for sure, but I do know we all found them uncomfortable just sitting in the showroom. And I can't get past just how comfortable the RRS rear seats looked and felt. Never thought I'd be thinking about a RRS over a Disco Shocked

Yes the car might look right & drive good to you but to others it's missing something and it's being pointed out you can tell by the silence both from Dealers & Land rover themselves to what has been said.

I predict there will be lengthened wheelbase version D5 brought to market very quickly.

I was in the Leeds J/LR dealers today...buying a set of metal pedals for the XK...delayed Chrimbo gift.
I had a chance to have a long very detailed look at the two D5's in the showroom.....not approached by sales staff - they realised what I was about.
I'm 5'11" currently & setting either front seat to a realistic but not selfish to the 2nd row passenger...getting into the 2nd row seats my knees are about an inch from the seat back.
Ok my shoes do go under the seat...but the whole of my thighs get no support, so your perched on your bum with your knees in the air.
Where people taller than me put thier longer legs eludes me.
OK maybe short journeys - but long journeys would be very uncomfortable

I'm surprised the D5 second row seat squabs aren't higher (stadium seating) as this would possibly improve the thigh support issue.

I had the opportunity to drop all the seats, the second row seats not getting flat reduces the potential cargo space:
Seats 6 & 7 dropped the cargo space (left if 5/5 passengers in there) is drastically different to a D3/4, not just an alternative shape but smaller in real terms. Realistic luggage for 4/5 people.....well it'll be stacked to the roof lining.

The sales guys I spoke to said many potential customers have come to look but are immediately commenting on the passenger seating, inferior to a RRS which isn't a big in the back vehicle anyway, inferior to an Evoque.....having all the LR models side by side so customers can try one then the other is the comparison that customers are trying out - in a showroom all you can do is look & sit in...it's the sitting in that's an immediate situation if the wife & family don't fit.

I drove there in my younger daughters FL2....drivers seat set for me, getting into the back seat the thigh support is total. The comparison is a stark one. 4/5 seat FL2 has superior rear seat accommodation / tihigh support compared to D5 & an FL2 isn't that large a car..

Actually having LR vehicles in the same showroom as the F-Pace...which has thigh support rear passenger seating the comparison is one that I would suggest will boost F-Pace sales, especially if the foot pan is shared with the VELAR & F-Pace gets air suspension for larger engined derivatives.
So heater fan knob settings & other gimmickry are or could be a distraction to the real issue of accommodating the odd adult sized passenger in the 2nd row seats.

By the way the 2nd row of seats slide backwards and forwards and apparently they have an option to fold completely flat if you hold the fold button?

Did you have the 2nd row slid back? I felt there was more legroom than in the D4. Sitting behind my seating position in the D4 my knees almost touch the seat back.

It does have stadium seating, though its marginal, and they do fold flat, or at least they have done on all the ones I played with Confused

no I dont - & it was an option to be considered this year

Reviews...

realistically none
Im quite capable of making my own mind up from what I see relating this to what my immediate & future needs are....reviews by journalists - well theres enough said on here about the media & this is run by journalists

Reading that seats are adequate is radically different to actually going, seeing & trying them
REading "it this" or "that" cant compare for looking & trying yourself....
& I dont read reviews to justify what I already have

I have a D3 that at some stage may be replaced...if the D5 had been the vehicle we all hoped it would be it could have been that.
Before that a string of D1's & D2's - so the D3 was the logical progression.

Thoughts:
possibly a D4....but dont need to rush into things
Jag F-Pace.....maybe as a replacement for the FL2
FFRR - could be the one vehicle solution if I go to one vehicle / current needs alter - sadly divesting the XK

Other makes may be looked at:
BMW - NO
Audi - NO
Volvo - maybe
Toyota - NO
JEEP - possible

I suggest that respect the views and opinions of others.

The D5 second row seats provide a great deal more space and comfort than the D3/4 in my view. That is one of the reasons that I have ordered one.
