Dead Disco

Help !
This morning went to start my four and a half year old D3....totally dead.....the remote wouldnt open the doors

The battery is about a year old & the car hasnt done anything like this before...it was parked for about five days
.....vehicle worked perfectly well (no warning lights) up to parking it

What should I look at as being the culprit as regards running the battery down ?
What should the current draw from the battery be whan the vehicle stopped with engine stopped ?

I know the Sat Nav drive under the seat does things when vehicle stopped - engine off & the suspension can level itself by letting air go...does anything else run ?

Probably Halifax that has drained it. Try parking it somewhere else 8)
(Lived there for 27years and then I had to get out Wink

Lights being the obvious one for a start.....

You checked the battery connection?

Charging OK? Alternator might not have been charging fully....

Have you done the mod to provide permanent power to the 12V sockets?

Any other mods?

Also, I know you say it was parked for 5 days, but what were you doing before then? E.g. were you cleaning it, etc? where it would've drained the battery a bit

My Disco is totally unmodified.....bog standard
~ the only extra I have is the iPod thingy that connects to the radio...no iPod in there when parked & radio off
I was cleaning the car (putting leather cleaner on the seats just before I left it parked - so guess only yhr doors were open - but I didnt trigger the internal lights on

~ I get the point about Halifax....it drains me at times even thought was born there...here working under sufference....was a nice place 30 years ago when it was awash with employment in what were world class companies...its run down & dowdy now. Very sad as it was a nice place to grow up in & be

Before I jump start it I will of course check the battery connections to see if they are OK..if if they have worked loose it can only be as a result of a dealer servive as I never touch these..no reason to

The lights I always leave on Auto so I dont have to think about lights...so unlikely that I left them on park....point taken though I will check the postion of the light switch before I do anything.

Charging appeared normal...well no warning lights onthe dash up to the point of parking it...& I hade some really long journeys....not stop start.

The only thing I did wrong was park it nose first into the parking bay....so no access to get there with another vehicle & normal jump leads have had to borrow trans atlantic cable length ones that probaly will reach

~ Yes, shame its got like it has. Was at Butlers and Crosrol myself and both went down the drain....

Do you have sat nav? Could check the voltage on the screen when you get it going. If not, get yourself a voltmeter for the 12v socket:

Alternator shorting to earth? Loose battery terminal? Let us know when you find out, good luck.

If you left the door open cleaning it with the keys in, that will most likely be the problem.

Doesn't take long if the keys are in the ignition.

Yep, if the car stayed 'awake' whilst being cleaned may have done it. The car draws a silly amount of amps when awake and it easy to exhaust the battery. Having been careful for years I drained mine whilst sorting out the spare wheel winch, which led to some impromptu car hoovering and other minor tweaks. When I sat back in the car and reached for the ignition the memories of past follies came flooding back. The optimistic turn of the key caused little more than gentle clicking.

Out came the Ctek charger...

Got in via the key hole in passenger door - the alarm made a feeble attempt to bleep
none of the switches in wrong postions & no interior lights on
OK got the mega long jump- leads & struggled to get enough current to crank the engine....so left the donor car running & got some charge into the disco battery...20 mins later Disco started...

I did check all the wiring to everything I could reach...all appeared OK

Went out for an extended run to get the battery back up to full (maybe 30 miles of varied running)

Parked the car as per normal & looked & listened to what happened before locking door....
the sat nav box with DVD blow passenger seat whirred & clicked (normal)
all lights off afte time delay
the only thing that stayed on was the radio display screen stayed lit (green colour) for ages after I had locked the car

Tried again this morning & all seemed ok...the only strange thing was that on re parking the car the hill descent engaged when reverse selected..it has never done this before....
so went for another trial run all systems appeared to be OK (suspension hieght, gearbox modes, HDC going forwards on & off, radio on/off, lights delays all the things I could think of....

So the next port of call call is the dealers to check the charging circuit (in reality this must be operational...but it has to be checked "by instruments".
And I suppose the battery at a battery shop.....

The only real test is to leave it parked abgain for say 5 or 10 days days & see what happens....

My D3 HSE (05 reg) has been a right PITA!!

Totally random (ie after 5 days of sitting or just overnight) flat battery has occurred many times now - I've even used up my '6 call outs per year' from the AA and they want me to pay more membership money?? WTF

Each time they have come out to it they have done the full set of tests; test battery before charging/boosting, check condition of battery (it's perfect - it should be as it's brand new), battery check after charging/starting, alternator working okay, etc etc.

Still at random it will flatten the battery overnight!

The AA have suggested putting it into a Land Rover Stealer overnight to let them see where the drain is occurring but the tests they have carried out each time they visit show no drain once the vehicle is locked/parked etc.

Any ideas/suggestions greatly received. Rolling Eyes

The only time mine went flat was when i continued a phone call out of the car that had started on bluetooth in the car. Maybe the car stayed awake when I got the question from my phone about disconnecting wrong Question

maybe...

I have now opted to leaving the disco parked for a week + just to see what happens....I use other cars in the week so its not a problem if it doesnt start but when we need the Disco it may me the BOss wanting to use it & I cant expect her to use jump leads
I did check the charging voltage & it was 14.2 volts at tickover

but...the one thing I did notice when I found my Disco "dead" was the suspension was very very low..it seeemed lower that the usual access hieght level Its normally parked at
...I just wondered if the levelling system stays live when the car is parked ?
& it tried to re-level itself.

I know that Disco 2's had a system to put the alarm system to sleep after a long period of non use & again wonder if this is the cae with Disco 3's & for that matter 4's

I'd still agree that this was the cause. Very easily done.

looked at another post

about flat batteries & it was aid the Disco battery is not a lead-acid one but another technology

http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/topic65682.html?highlight=

is this the case with official dealer fit LandRover replacements ?

& if it wont take a trickle charge what does it take it to charge it ?

Surely the alternator input is a trickle charge ?
