Decisions on 18" or 17"? Wanna swap? |
|
After months of waiting we are nearing final preparations for our Simson Desert trip. Close to last comes the wheels and rubber.
Great difficulty finding 18" ATs so now considering choice of GMAX Wheels with either Cooper STs or Pirellis or BFG.
A couple of questions:
Anyone have experience with 17" and the right tyre size so the spare still fit?
Anyone interested in swapping original 17" alloys for my beautiful 18"s??
When I have a few more moments, I'll document my other preparations and fun and games fitting the following: ICOM 400iPro including difficult wiring; additional power outlet at rear, plus stronger wiring; bullbar; fuses designed to be changed by hobbits (I'm sure I read that on this forum somewhere already ). Hi there,
There are a few of us on this Forum who fitted Cooper LT245/70/17 ST's or STT's. One member (RichardK) has BFG's.
The Cooper in the above size is 777mm diameter which is marginally bigger that the OEM tyre and will fit in the spare wheel well. The BFG is larger and will not fit.
If you are to get Coopers then get the STT over the ST. You cannot get the ST in the anti chip compound and the tyres will chip badly like mine did before they were changed to STT's.
If you cannot get OEM 17" then get yourself a set of PErformacne 17x8 or GMAX 17x8. The Performacne have a higher load rating (1400kg) that the GMAX (950kg). They are around the same cost but a lot less than OEM's

Will 17" rims fit on the DIII? I thought 18" was required to clear the brakes?

Thanks for the answers. PCH are you sure the 17" Cooper STT's fit in the spare space? It seems awfully tight to me - I'm surprised even the ST's fit in there!
BTW where brand are your wheels? Disco 3 TDV6 SE

Yep absolutely sure. I have a set of 5 and the spare is under the back. I can winch up the spare with some space still to clear the towbar and the spare wheel heat sheilds.
Size is 245/70/17.
Wheels are "Performance Wheels" Style BB6.

Thanks for that Chris.
Looks like STT's are the go, so now off to the bank manager, or is that the wife...
