Is it deid? - Yes it is!

I suspect I know the answer to this...

2008 D3 with no issues (yes weird I know).

This morning just after pulling out of a junction, around 30 kph, the oil light came on for a brief second and the engine stopped.

It won't start but will turn over (although only tried briefly) but the noise is obviously not normal.

Who's going to guess - crank or bearings? And can I tell without stripping? Belt is intact and tight, so not tensioner, no oil on ground.

264,000 km so if dead it's done not too badly, except I have only owned it for less than 2,000 of those!

Thanks for any guesses, my guess is that it's bad.

What does deid mean? Dead? Wink

With a spun bearing, they tend to run normally, only with a rattle/knock...
Since broken crankshafts in the D3 TDV6 2.7l are not common (that is a more common issue on the later 3.0 version) there may be still some hope left for you...

Did you check the fuelpump belt also? Rear side of the engine?
 Best regards
Harold

Yes... can't help my colloquialisms, sorry Smile

Ok - when turning over just after it stopped it tried to fire a couple of times but didn't; start. When I tried again it turns over but with a horrible rattling noise and no attempt to fire.

Will check the fuel pump belt... hadn't done that.

Thanks

Codes checked and showing P0341 and engine does crank without noise but sounds very fast.

Searching around here it seems it's likely to be the oil pump but I will investigate further...

Your info is a littlebit confusing tbh..

First you say, it makes a horrible sound when cranking, now you say it cranks without noise
First you say; belt is intact, now you suspect the oil pump...

Can you explain more? Which belt did you check? The auxiliary belt? You have to check the cambelt, behind the covers, to know if your tensioner is broken off the oil pump for example...

When it cranks with the starter... does the auxillary belt and cambelt turn/ move/spin arround?
 Best regards

Yep sorry, being a fanny as I initially looked at the aux belt.

When it stopped (very quickly), it made a crunching sound and when I tried to start it, there was noise.

But when I went back later to check the codes and tried to start there were no strange noises, the engine cranks and the fan/ aux belt all move whilst cranking.

No firing though, just cranking.

The bad news is though that code is Camshaft sensor related, possibly your cam belt tensioner has snapped off the oil pump or a cam timing chain has gone Shocked Shocked

Open the oil filler and see if the crank moves when turning over.

when one of the idler tensioner bolts decided to split in two this is how mine sounded. Belt was off, idler came off and the car turner over but didn't turn the crank. Very upsetting as it was 04.23am in France loaded to the brim about 2 hours South of Calais with the wife and two kids.....

technically speaking, you can only see a camshaft moving that way.....

it gives "some" clue indeed..
