Hi all,
any thoughts on depreciation of the d4 now the new model is about and the torries are hammering the diesel owner? I spoke to a dealer (I wasn't buying) he reckoned demand hasn't changed and doesn't expect the diesel drama to have a bit impact on used prices??

That one was from March this year but you have to wonder about these deals that rely on an expected value at hand back time after 3 years.

I've kept a very regular check on the used value of mine over the last 6 months (and especially the last 2 montgs - checking daily), building up to finally agreeing a selling price late last week.
Despite adding 2,500 to 3,000 miles a month, my 16MY HSE Luxury has barely shifted in all that time. Certainly, there was a dip over the summer and again with the registration change, but any losses seem to have been made up with subsequent rises.
I remain eternally grateful for Gerry McGovern's valiant efforts in helping to maintain the rock solid residuals of the 4; thanks McGovern, you're a complete star!
As for diesel, I believe that they'll be a real hit on values amongst the sorts of car that never needed a diesel in the first place, like the low mileage superminis and small family hatchbacks but, where people understand the need for diesel (such as serious 4x4's), I believe that the demand will stay strong. Having said that, I'd try and avoid anything pre Euro 6 as it'll be these cars that may be most politically acceptable to be first to be hit in any opportunistic tax grabs, while first year VED changes may only affect the sales of the new ones.
Whatever happens, the Guardian will continue to print "diesel doom" stories 2011 - 2015: 3 x FL2
2015 - 2017: 2 x D4
2017 to date: FFRR SDV8
2023 to date: FL2 as a second car
2021 to date: Hinckley built ‘14 Triumph Trophy 1200
2022 to date: Hinckley built ‘14 Triumph Trophy 1200 & sidecar!
(One of only two known to exist in the world!)

Ask yourself one question, just how much would the same cars have lost in the same period, diesel or nor? yes the same, great story eh!

Perhaps the question is whether more drastic legislation over the next couple of years will make a £60k diesel car less attractive??

This doesn't worry me; IMHO it's all about total cost of ownership.
I'm a long term owner. I have owned each of my last three Discoveries ( 1, 2 & 3) for 7 or more years, during which time I have travelled 280k, 180k & 87k miles in them. My annual mileage goes down as I age, I'm now 75 !
I expect to keep my D4 Landmark for at least another 5 or 6 years, by which time hopefully JLR will have some interesting EVs or Hybrids.

1973 MG B GT V8 - 3.9L John Eales engine, 5 speed R380 gearbox, since 1975.
1959 MGA roadster - 1.9L Peter Burgess Engine - 5 speed gearbox
Past LRs - Multiple FFRs, Discos & a Series I - some petrol, some diesel,
none Electric or H2 fuel cell - yet.

The dealer I bought my Landmark from yesterday said there is very good demand for late D4s. As he said the equivalent D5 would cost at least £20k more.
