detachable tow bar

Q1. does the D4 already have all mounting points etc for a detachable tow bar ? is it just a case of buy one off ebay or wherever, remove the red blanking plug and push the tow bar in until it clicks/locks in place ?

Q2. are the electrics a plug and play loom (2011(61) D4 MY12 with reverse cam)

TIA

Q1 Yes and Q2 no!

But don't fret, the electrics are easy enough to fit - I did it a few weekends ago. Once you get a good loom, the connectors are there behind the passenger side rear lights / boot cubby area. I got my tow bar and loom from a member here

The electrics are plug and play in the sense you can plug them all in and they work and can be used. They however need to be activated to get them to work correctly with regards to suspension self adjusting and the reverse sensors wont automatically disarm when towing electrics are fitted until they are activated.

I did plug and play and ran mine for 11 months until car went in for next service. Thumbs Up

thanks for the quick reply.

im not so fussed about the electrics at the moment, its for a simple tow bar bike rack that will only ever really do short 15 min trips to the trails round where I live although obviously a light bar should be fitted if the bikes obscure the lights etc.

how do the electrics plug in then? do I need to be looking at splicing into existing wiring? I know someone local with IID so programming hopefully wont be an issue

There should be no cutting/splicing as the molded sockets are there to be plugged in to.

You can choose from just the Black 7N socket and loom to power your lighting board, or 7N & Grey 7S sockets and looms which would then set you up should you get a caravan.

Having the 7S socket also gives you the option to charge your car battery using the adapter available from the Disco3 shop Thumbs Up

NOt sure if anyone has actually stated this but the wiring loom is a 'stand alone' part which needs to be purchased in addition to the towbar itself. Very simple to fit though, even for a ham-fisted individual like me Thumbs Up

cheers Thumbs Up

I have no plans to own a tin tent as im a bit more hardcore and prefer the flimsy kind of tent Laughing . Ive just sorted a roll out awning and extension, and easy erect tent big enough for me to stand in. So im ready for the off once we are allowed Very Happy

as for battery charging, under normal circumstance the D4 is my daily driver doing 60 miles round trip commute 5 days a week, and its a fairly new battery, so at the moment I don't have a need for charging whilst parked up.

so its just 7N would meet my requirements.

the hunt is on for a cheap detachable tow bar and then a loom with 7N plug Thumbs Up

There are the original LR fitting instructions for the loom in Wiki, is is for the D3 but the way it fits is the same only the plugs different, least it’s a guide to get the gist of it.

The MY 10 and 11 have the connections behind the rear right light, the MY12 onwards are in the bumper on the left. I bought a MY12 Genuine LR loom but what I got was a MY10 and 11 loom. I complained and got told it will still fit. When I ignored the instructions I realised that the 10 and 11 loom is in 2 parts, a part from the rear left panel to the bumper bar and then the 2nd part from bumper bar to sockets. On the 12 on loom LR have simply added the 1st part of the electrics to the factory harness.

Just a thought but why not just go for a single 13 pin socket and cover all bases? I know the OP said he wouldn’t be towing but most new trailers have 13 pin connections as do most new caravans... you can charge through a 13 pin socket as well...

its a worth a thought and im always confused at 7n 7s 12n 12s etc

i guess there is a very small chance of a trailer being towed in the future but definitely not a caravan.

im going to look for a tow bar first but im not going to pay a silly price for one as it will hardly get used except for taking the bikes somewhere occasionally

Am I right in thinking that you can’t remove the key from the detachable tow bar lock unless it is mounted on the vehicle?

Or is there a technique to get the key out once off the vehicle?

Press the small silver coloured bullett on the back of the hitch and the locking bolt will shoot out and the handle will turn, allowing you to remove the key Thumbs Up
