Detachable tow bar theft! Second time.....replace with anoth

Hi - I have a D4 HSE, seems like I have had my second detachable tow bar stolen (fallen out?) in 12 months.

So I'm wondering whether to get another detachable or go for a fixed? If fixed can anyone recommend in Surrey? Guildford/Woking area? If detachable is there a way to stop them being nicked! (Chain or similar?)

Thanks loads in advance.

there's a plate that bolts over the detachable one to keep it there (which in itself suggests it will be stolen or fall out without the plate )

however, given you must be leaving it in-situ, I'd suggest go "fixed". lot's of bods on here like the Tow-Trust version.

That's really helpful thank you.

Is it important/valuable to get genuine land rover parts for a fixed and have it fitted by a dealer? My local garage is coming back to me with a quote but I'm guessing it's going to be very high.......

If you want to use the detachable towbar, take it off when you are not using it. If you dont want to take it off, get a fixed one!

I use my removeable one to tow about 3 times a month. It takes all of 5 minutes to put it on or take it off to store.

I fitted a Witter Fixed tow bar. It isn't difficult to do. Thumbs Up

Picked my D3 up a month ago, no spare or tow bar! These also seem to have "fallen off"! Laughing

Replacement, matching spare from Big Dave, wheel protector from Ray (highly recommended and I tell everyone I know with a D3/4 who will listen about them!), new winch and picking up a detachable tow bar next week from Furniture man!

Cost me a few quid after the previous owner learned the hard way, so will be making every effort to ensure they stay with the truck now! People on this forum though have been superb helping me find parts!

Couldn't agree more though, if you use it regularly enough that taking it off and stowing it is an inconvenience, fixed all the way!

Removeable one should be removed after use or it might wear the rear cross member - see LR recall etc
The Tow Trust fixed one gets good reviews, easy to fit and less than £200 off eBay Thumbs Up

In germany, if you leave the removable, and some other "specialist" wrecks their car on it, you're part liable. The reasoning is that the damage would've been less if you had put the thing away when not using it.

So, there...

Crikey ... I was thinking of fitting a towbar for exactly that reason...the one on the 300tdi was forever picking up "character marks". So fixed it will be!

(after long list of other things that require money)

Don't leave it on if you are not using it. The lock just clogs up with muck / dust then you break the key trying to unlock it
